Power steering bracket issue

OK, so I now have some oem brackets. Upon looking them over to install I notice my new PS pump will not fit the brackets..... I have the pump out of the jeep, looking at how I can mount it up. Would any of you have a picture of the back of the pump mounted to the stock v8 bracket?

That helps to start with. Would you be kind enough to get a pic from directly behind the pump, or as close to behind it. I am trying to see the details of the lines and bolts on the back of the pump. I am thinking I may have the "wrong" pump....:?

I'll check IF the one I pulled off a 1978 258 is the same as mine...if so it is laying in the yard as I pulled it yesterday and I can easily take pics.

Just checked...couldn't be THAT easy, 258 and 304 of 76 & 78 located the alt differently...posting a pic on 304, yell BINGO if I get what you need

 

I think that is it. I have a FSM but it is unclear as to how the PS pump mounts to the bracket. There were some home made brackets on there before, I am just trying to get it done right..... Is there anything between the OEM brackets and the pump?

Some of the pumps came with a tension arm on the back of the pump like this one in an Ebay listing:

My pump is spaced off the bracket with about 1/4 inch worth of washers to line up the pulleys. The pump that was on your bracket was bolted directly to it without a tension arm or spacers. I assume your pump has a couple of studs on the back?

There are no studs, only threads for bolts on the back. I'll get a picture of it and post in the morning, I am off to work in a few minutes.

OK, here are a few shots of what I have going on.

Looking at the pressure line I know it will not fit.... Should I try to bend it or just bring my pump/bracket setup and old line to get a new one? Other than that I now understand I need to shim the pump to bracket connection.

Dave, if you would not mind to get a pic of the back of the pump that would be a great help.

Kent, I think the pump reservoir you have is for a different application... not sure which one. If you look at it, you can see that the parts that can't move (that are part of the pump body) thread in through your bracket just fine. You should also have a 'pivot' where the empty hole in your bracket is, and the low-pressure line should be more centered in the bracket. Look at NorthernMich's picture above, and you can see the pivot - it's the rusty thing sticking out in the center of the picture. The pump should rotate on that pivot to tighten the belts, and the two bolts hold down the pump to the bracket.

If you have the right pump reservoir, you should be able to get hoses for this application (ie '75 CJ with the 304 and PS) and use them without mods. If you have the newer style PS gearbox with o-ring seals, you may be able to use the later CJ-5 hoses... look at parts for the last year that the V8 was offered. The o-ring style adapter just threads in to the back of the reservoir, so you should be able to get one of those at the junkyard if you need to go with the o-ring style.

I think Kent is missing the 2 mounting studs that thread into the back of the reservoir.
I'll find a diagram in the book.

Yep, they are part of the pump and should have been pulled with the pump.

Apparently the pivot isn't always present, though the bracket that Kent has and the bracket in Jim's picture has a hole for the pivot.

OK, we are back on the trail again!!

I had to make one stud for the back of the pump, interesting as that is METRIC....... One stud was on the back of the old pump, yes I did not turn it in yet! I also had to get a longer than stock belt as my pulley is bigger, so I'll be on the lookout for a stock size one. Once again thank you all for the help!!!
