Just got back from the garage after another 4 hour stint getting the F head installed. Got it all ready to fire up. Filled with oil, antifreeze, fresh fuel. disconnected the distributor as directed by the engine shop and cranked her over for several seconds to get the fuel and oil and water flowing. reconnected the distributor and......

       :smash: :smash: :toetap: :toetap: :? :?

noticed antifreeze running out of the middle exhaust manifold stud region. Yes the manifold is connected with fresh studs, locktite, and torqued to specs I followed the repair manual for that.

So the engine shop guys screwed something up. Any body got any ideas of what could be screwed up?

obviously they are going to have to tear into it again, and frankly I'm wiped out after spending the last week preparing and installing this dang thing after work.

Drain the coolant, pull out the offending stud and put a GOOD thread sealant on it. The stud is in the water jacket and just loctite won't seal it up. You should be able to do it without pulling the manifold off, just be sure and get it as dry as you can before you put it back together. Compressed air will work. I had the same problem with one I had, although the cause was a heli-coil in the hole was letting coolant around it, even though the stud was coated with sealant. Not a huge deal, just a PITA.

 ZORDS Drat oops fragging thing. Do you mean to tell me that when I drilled out my old exhaust manifold bolts and tapped in a slighter larger bolt that my center drilling didn't go through the back of the boss molded into the block???
I thought sure I had holed the block. I used JB Weld, forced into the newly tapped hole and then threaded the new stud in, let it sit a day and it hasn't leaked since. Looks like if the stud hole was already through to the water jacket, I don't have a trip to a machine shop in my future. to fix the mistake.
Its amazing what you know and then find out that you don't know.
Cheers, I learned something new today that I didn't know yesterday.
    Thanx

Could the head gasket be on upside down? With a water jacket passageway out of alignment with the gasket? Just guessing.....

Followed advice of SIDSCJ and m38willys, looked in the middle exhaust manifold stud hole with a light. you can see that it connects with the water jacket passageway. So I put high temp thread sealant on it and voila, no more problem! Thanks guys.

I am having carb problems now... see my thread on carburetor help.
