    Hi,

What would be the normal compression for the Hurricane F-134 in the 1961 CJ5. I measured it a today and it reads between 118 and 120 PSI on all 4 Cylinders. I finally got it to start after adjusting the float which fixed the leaky carb issue in my other post. It idles a bit rough and when I reve it up smoke comes out of the tail pipe which prompted me to check compression.
The smoke is grayish white. This Jeep was sitting sine about 2004 according to what the previous owner told me when bought it from him.

According to the Jeep Owners Bible by, Moses Ludel the compression should be 120-130 (psi) , but your readings should be acceptable in my opinion.

white/gray smoke sometimes means that there's water gettin' into the combustion chamber when it's running.... but I'm no expert.

I'd be very happy with a set of matched compression figures like those.

how long have you let it run? white grey smoke may just be moisture in the exaust where it has set,if so it should go away

I bought it 2 weeks ago and the previous owner told me he had not started it since arround 2004 but he also told me it had smoke last time he started it but did no say what color. In idle there is no smoke. I only see smoke it when I rev it up.

    sounds like bad valve seals.

Valve seals could be bad even if compression is 118 to 120 PSI?

is the smoke jsut at acceloration off idle? If so then the seals can be leaking enoguh to get oil in the cylidners, then once you get the RPMS going it will seal up and then no smoke.

ok I have to try and see if it is just at acceleration of if it stays constant at higher prm.
