I just went and looked at a 1967 Tuxedo Park Mark IV Cj5. It is in good shape. It has recently been painted and it is very clean. The top and the doors are not in good shape however. The man is wanting $4,000 for it. This sounds like a reasonable price to me. What do you guys think? Also, where is the cheapest place to buy doors and tops for jeeps that old.

If you want it, have a place to keep it, and can afford to buy it and start the addiction, then go for it! The price/value, of course, depends on the condition and how much you like/want it. Some more details and some photos will help this group help you better. I think a Tux Park would be worth that, if it's in good condition. Running, legal and titled?

Does it have a V6 or 4 cyl. F-head? Are all the Tux Park details there and in good shape? Are the chrome bumpers, hood hinges, hood badges, latches and wheel covers all there and OK? Repainted with original & correct color? Be sure and crawl under it with a good flashlight and look at every nook and cranny, especially the body mounts and frame. Look for rust and cracks, damage, etc.

I personally wouldn't worry about the soft top, I'd probably run it nekkid with no top for quite awhile. I believe there's only one top maunufacturer right now, that's Bestop. You'd want a Supertop, not the Tigertop, and there's a lot of dealers that sell them. There is also STC (formerly Kayline), but they've currently suspended production for awhile, something about new ownership. Those are better tops IMHO, I hope to see them back soon because I'll need one too.

Good luck to ya, and welcome from Denver! I've got me eyes on this '64 Tux I found in a barnyard, if they decide to sell it. I imagine they have the wheel covers in the barn, but I didn't ask yet.

This is a restored CJ6 Tux, I think it's gorgeous...

I would offer him 3 and go from there. There's no such thing as an old jeep with a fixed price. Either you won't sell it at any price, you're fed up with it and want it gone, or you need the money for something else. See how much farther down the guy will go. I've actually been looking at tops. I'm in AZ so I don't get rained on much.

Welcome to the boards by the way!

I'm new to jeeps and don't know what all the tux mark iv's had. It has the trim on the side of the hood. It also has chrome bumpers front and rear. It has a V6. One thing that I am curious about is that it has a floor shifter. One of the articles on this site indicated that Tuxedos came with a column shifter. It is painted black. Was this an original color? It also does not have the original wheels. Could this be a regular CJ5 that someone has added some of the tux stuff to? The man is not really trying to sell it, so I don't think he would come down on the price any.

    Good questions...

I seriously doubt that black was a Tux color, but don't know that for sure. Close inspection with a strong light, especially behind the dash and underneath, would likely reveal the original color someplace. It's quite a job to change a vehicle's color and cover everything, everywhere. Mine had been repainted off the frame, so it was everywhere even behind the dash, but they didn't take the dash off and I found the original color where the dash mounted to the tub.

Same with the floor shifter, maybe the V6 Tuxes were floor shift, don't know. Sure wouldn't be hard to put the Tux badges on the hood, or the chrome bumpers either, but finding a set of either would be the hard part, let alone both. Unless you had access to salvage a Tux in really bad shape.

I'm sure the serial number will tell the tale. And there's some really knowledgable people here too about those details.

If it's a tux, the VIN will start with 8322, instead of 8305, like a non tux.....

I'm not sure if you're really after the "Tux" or just a cool old Jeep, but $4000.00 should buy you a pretty nice old CJ. There's a lot of old flatties and regular CJ5's to be had for $4000.00 that may be nicer than this one. Just a thought. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

A very good point! If you just want a Jeep you might keep looking. I want that '64 Tux because it's a one-owner stocker, in nearly unmolested original condition, and will clean up great. Don't know that I'd pay 4k for it, if I even could. It's sat right there for 20 years, has an '86 tag on it. Has a bobcat skull in the back too!

I have been doing a frame up, restoration on a $1200 1955 Cj5 and it's just about ready to be reassembled. Its only now that I know what to look for on these old jeeps. These are just a couple of things that come to mind, has it been converted to a 12 V system, does it have good compression, does the transmission make excess noise, how does it shift into second gear, I would also disconnect the steering and see if there is any binding. Check the condition of the breaks. I know firsthand that all these things can add up to a lot of money. How badly worn are the clutch and brake pedals, does it have a parking brake, Is there any rust in structural areas of the tub, look at the front end to see if the axele is bent. Does the frame have any cracks, are there any broken leaf springs, It looks really nice from the photograph But if you are able to take the time to check these things, and anything else you can think of. it could be $4000, easily or it could be worth $1500 as a project jeep. Will the owner let you do all this testing. The next time I buy a jeep. I will know exactly what to look for and how hard these things are to replace and also how available these particular parts are. Good luck. I hope you have stumbled across a really good deal

Editing, I just realize. The first picture was not the jeep in question, but if it looks just like that. Everything else I have said still applies

    I've seen black Tuxes before...

    A CJ-6A to be exact.

The only time I've gotten in to a black tux was at a wedding.

Guess I don't see what that has to do with the question at hand here?

I thought the question was whether Tuxedo Parks came in black, I've seen a black CJ-6A before.

The 66-67 Tux with a V6 came with a floor shift tranny. The one in my late 66 (titled as a 67) wasn't a very good transmission. After a failure in 1967 I changed it out for a T14 and it's still in there. Most of my Tux accessories are long gone. Who knew they would be desirable? I thought those chrome bumpers were a joke. I bent the front one the first time I plowed into a very small tree. I threw it away and I swapped the back one for a draw bar. I swapped those padded cushions for a roll bar. I haven't missed any of those 'goodies'.
