Hey guys, I was wondering what you'd set the value of this CJ5 at if you were to sell it or buy it. I am also wondering about the hard top. Does it have any value? Would it be better to leave on this Jeep? Here are the specifics...

    1973 CJ5
    4x4 front hubs Superwinch
2nd owner I've put 40,000 miles on her
    3 speed
    original 6 cylinder 285 engine
    Kelly Manufacture Original Hard top
    Ball Hitch 1 7/8 inch
    New Bikini Top
    New Alternator May 2007
    Spare Tire Swing rack
High Back Best Top Seats 5 years old
    Original Back Seat

Does not have any rust other than on the hinges and surface rust on the hard top. Passenger front fender slightly dented. The seller wants $5500. Thoughts?

Looks like a good project Jeep to me, but that's probably kinda high. Jeep and top both look very saveable.

Are those Renegade wheels? All five of them?

I was thinking 2500-ish, but that can vary due to location. In the rust-belt states that could go to maybe $4000 IMHO.

When I look at these, I think about the factory options that I'd want. IMO the 258 or 304, doesn't matter. With a 258 I'd want the not uncommon T-18. Power steering is also a plus. To me, there's not much on the list that raises the value, except maybe the wheels, and the cab if you like it. The Meyer cab was available from the factory or dealerships; the Kelly was their competitor and less common.

Re the hard top, it's kind of up to you. I'd want a soft top, but the hard top would probably be ok if you had the original HD suspension or some equivalent replacement.

To me, it looks in pretty good condition... though being in high, dry Colorado helps. It's really plain though, except for the wheels. I like the wheels, that it has the original back seat, and that it looks original and complete. I don't like the replacement high-backs (I'd prefer the originals), that it isn't equipped as I'd like it, or the Whitco tire carrier. I don't think the Whitco is strong enough for a big tire - that was my experience with one.

So, for me, $5500 is too much. I recall that Jeeps are pretty high in Co though, so maybe that's fair. If it were for me, I'd keep looking...

It looks like it is in fantastic shape. I bought mine for 2500 with a hardtop, in great running shape and all electrical working. You can check out its condition in my signature.

It had rust through in the panels below the door openings and significant bondo in the rear corners. Yours looks much cleaner at first glance.

what do you have in it?

i would say it is worth low 3's

man for 5500 you could buy a junker with a title and ALMOST build one.

Seems kinda high to me....but then again I just paid $5200 for this.....
Mine's got a 304, brand new 35" swampers, and a new winch. Lots more also.

Really depends on what you want to do with it, In my case, I wanted a play toy that was built already, not one that I had to spend a bunch of money on to make what I wanted.
I like the hard top on that one, but they are a pain to take off in the summer, and I'd bet they are about as warm as a soft top in the winter. R)

If it has been exposed to salt, and it has done a fair share of plowing snow since 1973. It's hard to put a price on something without its real history
but from the photographs. It looks to be in really good shape

I think I'd have to have a closer look. Not sure what "rust free" means to this particular seller. For some people it means the bubbles haven't actually errupted through the paint. The rust on the top kind of uglies up the appearance of the photo. I imagine we may have different responses if the photo had been taken on a clear blue-sky day in a field of lush green alfalfa without the top on after a good waxing and a treatment of tire black. $5500 may or may not be too much IMO. Depends on the details. I wouldn't pay $5500 for rotted out hat channels and engine/tranny leaks. And it better run like a Swiss watch. And the heater better not smell like a mouse nest. I've seen quite a few vehicles that look awsome in photos but I wouldn't trust to drive me to the nearest bus station once I saw them up close.

I tried selling mine, which is in pretty good condition, for $3000 for over six months and got three phone calls and no takers. Even with the hard top, I'd say he's way too high. Maybe mid-3's.

Yeah, you're wacky on the juice ! LOL! It's been there the entire time.

Thanks for the replies! Here is the scoup; this girl contacted me (I'm in charge of my club's emails) through my club's website. She is the second owner and uses this Jeep as a daily driver. She got it from a family member, has put 40k on it over the years, and it is virtually unmolested with upgrades/changes. The paint is original, and other than the paint under the floor mats being rubbed off from the abrasion of dirt under the mats, this tub is completely rust free. No bubbles under the paint, nothing. It has seen an upgraded radio, seats, and the addition of a cb radio, but other than that is stock. This includes the engine that shows it's age in having no shine or luster under the hood, but appears to be leak free. The hard top has that "el cheapo" white paint that shows the surface rust from her putting her mt. bike and other things inside that have dinged up the metal causing it to rust on the outside. The wheels were probably and old school upgrade that was on it when she got it.

I was looking at it from a starting point for something to restore back to original and my gut instinct was that I'd offer somewhere in between $2000-2500.

BTW, a fellow club member did a frame up on this "Firecracker Red" beauty and I want to do something similar...

It looks and sounds like a good'un to me, but I'd want to work on that price too. $5500 is too much, IMO.

    That red one is beautiful!!!
