SuperJeep quandry

I told you fine folks several weeks ago that I'd acquired a 1973 SuperJeep in not so bad condition. I'm torn on what to do with this thing. If not for the fact that it's an unusual specimen I'd paint it whatever color I wanted, the original pale yellow not being one of them. On the other hand, it doesn't have the original seats and will require some bodywork and fresh paint so how original is it going to be anyhow?

Here's what I'm thinking: take a bunch of really detailed photos including the VIN tag so I have some evidence that it is actually an original SuperJeep, get it documented and notarized by an appraiser in the automotive field (for credibility, I suppose), then paint it whatever color I doggone well please. If someone someday wants to restore a SuperJeep I'll have proof that this was the real McCoy, whatever that's worth. They'll just have to forgive the fact that the body wore a color paint other than yellow for a period of time. Am I about to commit heresey? Once I shoot new paint I don't think it much matters whether it's the original color or not. It's no longer the original paint. What do you all think?

It's your Jeep, do what you want! I wouldn't do that to a Tuxedo Park in the same condition though. I think the Tux is a little more special though. JMHO.

 

the VIN won't help, as it doesn't distinguish the trim package.
you could just take pictures of the body, VIN and Trim tag for possible future reference; I wouldn't bother with the appraiser/appraisal part of it; beauty is in the eye of the beholder; it's only worth what someone is willing to pay; it's splitting hairs in my opinion.....
the Jeep would only be valuable to a collector if it was in very good or good original, unmolested condition; condition is everything, from all items A to Z.
Once you've done what you're going to do, it really doesn't matter any more.

Definitely, especially if it's already been painted/changed. Go ahead with no regrets.

 

You eased my wearied mind. I'll paint with reckless abandon. Given the current condition it's worth more molested than unmolested. If someone wants to remolest it in a new color they're welcome to do so. I can't abide pale pastel yellow.

I think I'll start a "build" thread. All the photos I loaded to photobucket are pre-cleaning so they include all the racoon poop, dead leaves, and half-eaten driver's seat. I have more recent pics on my camera but I don't have it with me.

Actually, that yellow is the same as my boys' Scout!

 

The Super jeep decals are available at Austin Jeeps. I thought the red, white & blue was awesome.

to each their own, but I would restore it... even with the color you don't like...

We had only one or two around here in central NC in the 70's.... one was your color...i think in High Point.... the other white......

the white one was LOADED... PS PB Air cond, center console, etc... it 'wound up' with a 390 in it at one time

Saw it 'dash deep' in an arm of High Rock Lake.... with 8 track tape floating around..

One of the last times I saw it the ole superjeep was on its last legs... frame broken behind the drivers side spring... etc.. Guess too much 'air' at the top of hill climbs...

 

Many guys who restore even high end vehicles do a color change. I would go with the white paint job with the stripes. That combination looks great and I would say is the most readily recognizable Super Jeep color. Do take a lot of pictures and hang onto any original paperwork. I went so far with my Renegade as to get a color photocopy of the title I had to turn over to DMV. Keep the pictures coming!!!!
