I Have A Cj5 (304) That I Am Having Trouble With It Running Rich. I Have Tried Adjusting The Carb Mixture (holley 600). But With No Luck. It Seems That It Clears Up A Little When It Comes Up To Operating Temp, Then Acts Like If Fouls A Plug Or Something Once You Drive It For A While. I Do Not Know If It Getting Hotter Than What The Plugs Can Handle, Or Maybe It Is Out Of Adjustment. Not Very Experienced On The Holley Carb!! I Figure I Would Start With The Plugs And Wires, Etc... See What I Can Come Up With. Any Suggestions Would Be Great

    Thanks
    Josh

Welcome from Denver! I can't help with the carb issue, but can you refrain from capitalizing every word please? Kinda makes it hard to read, ya know. Thanks lots!

I used to run a holly 600. Usually the power valve gets ruptured, and it runs rich. either replace the power valve( on the metering block) or get a power valve eliminator kit. both options should solve your problem.

I wasn't trying to be a smart-alec or critical or anything, just asking a favor is all. It really does make it more difficult to read, sorta like ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING.

Don't you hate that it's hard to put "context" into a post? WVCJ5FAN, everybody here is helpful and no criticism was meant. By the way, welcome from Washington!

Yeah, you're gonna like it here. This is a much mellower place than most other Jeep or 4x4 forums I've found, no attitudes here. Some places are downright offensive to me, and I can be pretty crude myself. Lots of great info here too.

I agree the power valve is a good start, every backfire just replace. Also I ran into a problem with to much fuel pressure flooding my Holley.

I had a 76 CJ-5 with a 304 and it would always foul a plug during slow trail driving. The cure was a MSD ignition.

Check: choke for proper operation, float level, power valve. A good manual will be invaluable, as well as a carb specific repair book. These are available from your FLAPS or local speed shop.
Personally, I dislike Holley's, mainly because of said power valve problems.

(If you think P****e is bad, try seeing what they do to a newbie on a powerlifting/bodybuilding site!)

Sagegoat, are you saying if your Holley back-fires, you've probably taken out the power valve?

BTW WVCJ5FAN, Welcome from SW Washington!
Most all your questions will be answered here, just don't forget to use the 'Search' function, since there are few 'new questions', just ones that are worded different (I know, been there, done that!).

Everytime it pops through the carb, I had to replace it.

I replaced the plugs in the jeep, and it seemed to help a little with the running rich, but it is still not right. When you shut it down and try to start it back up it easliy floods. Could the power valve being cause it to leak while not running? Since it is part of the fuel metering? Or is this more of a float, needle valve or another thing that may not be correct. I believe i am going to replace the power valve and go from there. Thanks for the input guys, I absorb it all............

Yeah and I am not sure how you are adjusting the mixture either but the "screw" adjustment is for idle mixture and has little effect on driving mixture, you have to change the jets for that...
