I have two CJ5's, one is my 67 CJ5a that I am working on getting back on the road. The second is my parts jeep which is a 68 CJ5. they are both factory V6's, but I think they have different transmissions. My 67 has no 1st gear syncro which leads me to believe it is a T86. I have my fingers crossed that my parts Jeep tranny is a fully synchronized T14 and if so, I hope to swap it in.

Both transmissions are 3 speeds, and both TC's are single stick. I've tried looking for ID numbers, but cant seem to find them. Any suggestions?

The t86 has the fill hole on the drivers side the t14 has it on the passenger side.
The t14 is marked on the top of the case near the edge, of the passenger side with a t14aa or something of this type.

awesome, thanks! i'll check it today. If they are different and i swap, do I need to swap the TC with the tranny (are the rear shafts different)? Other than the syncros is the t-14 better than the t86?

The t14 has better gear ratios and a much lower 1st gear. The transfercase for the t14 will be a large hole case and will have a different bull gear than the t86, the t86 has a 6 spline output where the t14 has a 10 spline output. You can swap bull gears around though.

My doner hast the trans and TC, so it would probably be easier to swap as a package. Now I just need to decide if I should have them rebuilt, or try them out and see what happens.

I would make sure you have the T-14. The T-86aa was only used from 66-67, the t14a was used from 68-75. I would pull the rear cover on the transfer and count the splines, then get whatever tranny you are going to use rebuilt.

I would suggest going with the t14 due to the first gear synchro and better (lower) first gear ratio. However, you may need to swap the drivelines since (correct me if I am wrong) the t14 is slightly longer than the t86.

The parts tranny is definitely a t-14 (the number says t14aa) How dificult is it to rebuild these (special tools required)? The tranny shop in town charged me $700 to rebuild my t150 a few years ago, I don't want to put that much into this one. The trannys is on .5" longer than the t-86, will the drive shaft(s) slip in that much, or do I need the correct drive shaft(s)? I only have the front shaft from the doner, no rear.

The T14 is 5/8" longer. When I went from t86 to t14, I did not alter my drive shafts.... FWIW

You should search here and get yourself a FSM. I will be most helpful. I highly recommend the use of studs to help align the tranny and/or the t-case when you put them in. Buy bolts the same size as your mounting bolts but about 3" too long. Cut the heads off and screw them in a ways, slip the unit over them and voila! It's in. I filed flats on the end of the new headless bolts so I could take them out with an open ended wrench.

A few years ago I swapped my T86 for a T14. I had to have my rear drive shaft shortened a bit. I figured that since it was such a slight increase in length that it wouldn't matter, but mine did. I dunno why. Hope that you don't have that problem, but it didn't cost too much to get a local driveline shop to do the work.

X2:iagree: No drive shaft mod. here either. Rebuilding them isn't really that hard. just lay everything out and take your time, take pics as you go?.

So, I opened the cover on the T-14 and it looks pretty good inside, the jeep was on it's side for a while and most of the oil leaked out the transfer case vent (I assume). I plan to fill it with some diesel fuel and spin the input shaft with a drill through the different gears to flush it out. Then I'll replace the gaskets, refill with gear oil, clean and paint. The rebuilders around here want way too much to work on this, so I'll just cross my fingers and see what happens.

    Shouldn't a CJ-5A be a F134/T-90? Were V6 Tux Parks built?

(Tuxedo Park link from the front page is broken).
