I am planning on putting new seats in my CJ, does anyone have any preferences? I do however have one requirement and that is that they need to recline/tilt so the little ones can climb in!
The ones in it now are hi backs that do not tilt forward or recline. They have Rosser Jeep stamped on them.

I have been looking at these seats. I know that you said they need to be able to tilt forward - these definitely don't. I also want mine to tilt forward to get my dog in the back, no kids yet. I thought about fabricating a bar across the front mount for them to hinge off that way the will go all the way forward like the stock passenger. Just an idea but let us know what you choose and how you like them.

Doesn't sound like they'd bolt right up.

I've not seen any direct install seats for the intermediates that work like the original (tilt forward passenger seat). But almost any bucket should be easily modified with some rudimentary fab work.

I'm a bit funny about buying stuff made in a country with missles pointed at me. Haven't found a seat not made in China yet so I'll probably scrounge some seats out of the junkyard and make them work.

I swapped in some leather seats out of a 93 ZJ. It was a pretty easy swap, but thy are a little closter to the dash than the old ones. I considering doing the wheelhouse notch to give a little more leg room. But they are 10x more comfortable than the originals.

The originals also "folded" before tilting such that they would allow access to the back seat :

It'd be easy to make an aftermarket seat tilt (just by mounting it to the original seat frame), but w/o also being able to fold it'd be just about pointless.

For your requirements I'd be hunting down some originals.

I'd forgotten that the seat folded before tilting forward. Of course, I'd not ridden in an intermediate with original seats since I was nine or ten years old. I don't recall tilting the seat forward to get in, though. I think we just piled in like a gang of baboons, between the front seats or through whichever window happend to be rolled up.

Sometimes the "fold" function gets forgotten/unrealized - a bit of rust on the hinges and it seems like the seat will only tilt.

    Right, McRuff? :)

    John_pro2a,

I was exploring all the other options. He didn't say he was looking for stock bolt up seats. Any fab work for seat brackets will be very minimal.

Just MHO here...but any seat that doesn't also fold isn't going to get out of the way enough to get people into the back seat...maybe a dog though..;)

The non-folding buckets I had were *more* in the way when I tilted them forward...it was easier to leave them in place and crawl over/between them to the back.

I have been looking for a safety seat, which will accept a four or five point hitch seat belt and I came across this distributor that has a Large selection of seats that will accept the safety harnesses. They also have a large selection of other types of seats for jeeps. I have copied the page, hope it works. still learning how to do this.
Doug/Tucson P S. This is only one manufacturer look to the left and there are many other manufacturers

JC Whitney is carrying a less expensive suspension seat. I might go that route and new brackets meant for the fiberglass body.

Tilt without fold will allow you to get into the toolbox without removing the seat though. I used to carry a stick that propped up the seat so I could rummage in the toolbox.

That is if you have the stock steel body. I don't think any glass bodies have the tool box retained. At least mine doesn't.

My glass body has the toolbox. I do not know the manufacturer (installed by PO) Are you sure that you can't have one, or there is just not one there?

I stand corrected then. I figured they were all done away with when aftermarket bodies were put on. Sorry bout that. Didn't mean to mislead anyone.

I would like to see some aftermarket seats mounted in Jeeps and the owner explain how they did it and if it helped/hindered leg room. Lot's of opinions, including my own, but no pictures and descriptions. Right now I would like to lower my seats, but I don't want to lose any leg room in the process.

I just had my original seats recovered. I never even knew my passenger seat folded till a few months ago, it was so frozen. When they removed the foam they found a fair amount of rust particularly around the "fold" mechanism. After sandblasting the frames and replacing some of the bolt hardware, the fold feature works like new. They also added some foam in key places (particularly on the drivers side), and it made a huge improvement in the comfort.

I debated on fabricating some brackets and going with a more current seat with more bolster, but I opted to have the original lowbacks recovered. For me, it was the right decision.

I guess I should have used the word folded because that is actually what I would like them to do. I'm not to particular when it comes to being original jeep so I guess any aftermarket tilt/fold hi back seat would do. I was inquiring into what some of you guys may have already used so that I could save the research time so I can finish welding the spring perches back on!

A highback won't have the room to fold and flip forward to allow people into the backseat.
