I was changing the front brake shoes and noticed that the front drum was loose. When I took the drum off the inner wheel bearing was stuck on the spindle and had to use a puller to get it off. I was putting everything back together and when I was installing the inner bearing race it just fell into the opening. The p/o had put a tin piece of coke can around the race to make it fit snug( i found a bunch of pieces in the bearing and under the cup). The guy at AutoZone said the race had messed up the opening and I needed a drum. I noticed in the Essentials catalog that the front drum and hub are 2 different pieces and mine seems to be one piece. Do they make 1 piece drums or will the center(hub) come out with some friendly persuasion. Could there be a bigger size race that should have been installed? Are the bearings and cups a matched set? I tried installing the cup from the other side and it is still too small.

You need a new hub. Press the studs out, and back in to new hub/ old drum..

what year jeep is it off of? different brake drum sizes had different ways to attach the hubs...
64 was a break in wheel bearing sizes too for the inner bearings.

If you can grind the studs off and drill or punch them loose without damaging the drum go for it. Other wise you might need a new drum too.

I did a search here and found a reply someone had that said there are 2 different inner races on the left and right hubs. Could this be why the inner race on my hub just falls in. Are there 2 different dia.http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-24048.html - 22k - Supplemental Result
This is where I read the info. Also, when I try to slide the inner bearing onto the spindle it stops at the radius and won't fit flush against the seat, thats why it was stuck on the spindle when I removed the drum.

There are two different bearing/races, early and late. The difference is the width of the race and how the hub is machined for the different width. The outside diameter of the race is the same between the two. You will still need a new hub. If you have the early narrow race and bearing I'd recommend stepping up to the later, wider unit as they hold up much better by distributing the load over a greater area. No other mods are necessary other than the hub and bearings/races need replaced. Nickmil
