I have a 65 CJ and need to know the recommended lubricants for the front and rear axles, transmission and transfercase. It has a T-90 3spd trans, model 18 transfercase, model 44 rear axle and the front axle is the closed knuckle type. Thanks

80W-90 Hypoid Gear Oil. Limited Slip additive in the axles if you have a powerlock. Don't know about the Track-lock or other limited slip/lockers.

Try not to use GL5 rated lube in the trans, as it is harsh on the syncros. Look for a gl4 or manual transmission lube. Personally I run BG Syncroshift in my Trans and t-case, and it has never shifted better than it does now. For the rears, regular 80-90 or 75-90 should be fine, and like Vanguard said, use the proper additives if you have a limited slip of some sort.

Bristol,TN. Would you know what to put in the steering box? How would you determine if you have limited slip? Thanks

Actually, I've got a few questions on this too. I've got a locker in the rear, does that just take normal diff fluid?

Also, what grease do I use on my steering knuckles? Thanks!

What kind of locker do you have? For the knuckles do a search on knuckle pudding. You'll find more than you ever wanted to know. R)

I don't really know, the PO had bought it like that and didn't have a clue. It locks up hard. First time it did on the road it scared the crap out of me.

I use 85w90 in the axles/knuckles (pudding is messy and hard to clean up), 85w140 in the tr4anny/transfer (slows down the leaks) and the lucas oil additive (sp?) alone in the ross box. red grease in the steering linkages.

I always wondered if that lucas stuff worked. I see so many gas treatments and oil treatments on the shelf and wonder if they really do much.
