I am rebuilding a 1965 CJ5 the spring hangers are shot, they are the u-bolt style what should i replace them with. I want to keep itas close to stock as possible.

I don't understand what you mean by U-bolt style?

You can purchase replacement spring hangers from Turner 4wd.

PN6 in that diagram. That's for 76 and up Jeeps though, I just used that for illustration purposes. Give 'em a call. They're good folks to deal with and will do you right.

Maybe he means he has the cast shackles, like the military Jeeps used? Those are sort of like U-bolts. U-bolts usually refers to the bolts that hold the axle to the springs.

When you say 'hangers' that usually means the bracket that's welded to the frame. The spring end bushings go in the hangers and the spring ends, and the shackles allow the springs to lengthen and shorten when they flex.

    Re: Spring hangers

When you say shot that sounds pretty serious. At Willys works when the clutch and brake pedal assembly becomes shot. He sends them off to a machine shop, where the bracket is machined out an Bushings installed
and with new available parts or bushings sized to fit your worn out parts
it can be tight as new. you are talking about four brackets and shackles, can get expensive. If you just replace the shackles you may experience a 50% improvement, but the cheapest way to go is to find the
flat plate style with the fiber bushings that may fit. Also I would sit back
and wait for a more experienced reply to your post

I replaced them on my MB. Not too bad a job. I bought the rivet "simulators" from Mullins jeep parts. If memory serves, they run about $8 each for the hangers? JC Whitney has the shackles cheap.

    Re: Spring hangers

For replacement shackles you have several options where to buy. Turner 4wd, Walck's, Northstar Willys, off the top of my head.

Are you planning to keep the springs as well or are the flat/negatively arched? Do you want a lift?

If you wish to keep it stock, the easiest thing to do is just replace what's there with stock.

If not, poly bushings make a big difference and you can buy shackles relatively cheaply that are nice and sturdy.

Hopefully someone else can chime in here, sorry I'm not being much help beyond that. You might check the regular catalogs, 4WDH, Quadratec, etc. and see.

It's hard to recommend how someone should repair their jeep. Without seeing it and knowing what type of equipment they have to work with
