84 CJ8. Need to remove frt axles to replace u-joints. Removed dust cover. Can't seem to get the spindle off so i can remove the axles??? Any help would be appreciated. Don't won't to beat the crap out of the thing, but may have to. Letting it soak overnight in W-D 40 to see if it will help. I know there is some great ideas on here. I have searched the forum, but haven't found what i need yet. Maybe i over looked it. Thanks Guys.

go get a cheap shot filled rubber mallet and pound on the spinle on all sides. it will go, but it has been rusted on for a loooong time. defiantely keep the spindle lubed with penetrating oil, that is a good start. it will come off, just need to persuade it. an the rubber mallet will get tore up by the spindle threads, hence why i say get a cheap one.

thread two nuts onto the spindle
    keep them close together
thread no farther until they are both on the spindle, right at the end
line up the nut flat sides so they are together
tap tap tap on the flats till spindle moves
note: I didn't say BANG BANG BANG

You can use a small chiesel behind the spindle. Tap it in and work on left and right sidw it should remove the spindle. Only one problem. Make sure you file down any burrs the chiesel makes.

Jim, I did what you said on the '74 axle I got, but banged, with a 3 lb hammer... I eventually got enough separation on one side to wedge a screwdriver tip in, then beat it in the opposite direction... It took me over an hour to separate each side...
It was pretty clear as I rebuilt this '74 axle... about 5 years ago... that it had never been apart...
After I got the spindle out, and everything cleaned up and ready for reassembly, I liberally coated the mating surfaces with antiseize :D

Thanks. You folks are great help and full of humor. Makes working on these jeeps much more fun, knowing others have had the same problems before. Thanks again and i will let you all know how this turns out. This is a CJ8 that has been used on a mans farm all its life. Never washed at all. Had 23 years of mud and crud underneath.

Get your biggest hammer and hit it as hard as you can and if it breaks. It needed replacing anyway:smash:

I used a flat end on my air hammer for my '79 CJ7's spindles. If you're careful (meaning don't go to town air hammering everything in sight R) ) you will be able to remove the spindle.

Use of a dead blow is another good idea.

I gave mine a few whacks with a 5 lb hammer on the unmachined part of the spindle until it separated at the top then i stuck a screwdriver and gave it a few whacks from the bottom and it came apart. As far as i know it was the first time it came apart and i live in the rust belt. WD 40 is not a very good penetrating lubricant pick up a can of pbblaster or equivalent, it works much better.
