My front axle is leaking gear oil apparently, it looks like its coming out of the seal where it connects to the drive shaft. How hard is it to replace? After a long day of working one electrical stuff today I really don't feel like spending hours doing something that I might screw up (long story, bad luck with some aging wire today).

How tough is it to replace the seal or should I just take it in to get replaced?

it isnt that hard, you have to pull the yoke off and get a seal puller and pop out the seal. The nget some emery cloth and clean up the seal surface on the yoke, because it is probably cruddy. Clean the pinion shaft. Install the yoke, but have some RTV on the splines so the oil doesnt come out the splines. Then tighten it down. Tighten the yoke is also a hard thing because the yoke torque setting is really high. But i just torqued it down as much as i can with a breaker bar (lock the front hubs when you do this) and make sure there is not any play in the yoke.

Impact wrench is a BIG help with getting the nut off. I couldn't get mine off with the breaker, 4' of pipe and me (250lbs of me) standing on the end.

a pice of pipe or a socket that fits the steel surface long enough to get you past the pinion shaft will ease the install,<carefull not to damage the seal though>

Use a plumbers pipe wrench to hold yoke from turning by putting wrench on yoke and letting it hit the ground or frame to keep yoke from turning while you loosen the nut. My yoke was rusted to the pinion shaft and required a puller and lots of effoert to get off. Ended up tweaking the yoke and had to get another. Use a cheater pipe on a 1/2" drive breaker bar for the nut then reinstall nut as tight as the old one came off. Seal comes out using a big screwdriver tip and prying it out. Don't bend up the new seal hammer it back in.:hurrican:
