i just saw that walk's has them rebuilt for $139.

that got me thinking, is it too hard to rebuild one of these, or should i not bother?

i was thinking about that, but i haven't had any problems with any other part of the old 6v setup, and i think i'd be cheaper to replace the generator even if i go with a rebuilt one from walck's..

it's a tough decision though... part of me would like to convert it over to a 1-wire alternator, 12v, and get rid of the points with an electronic ignition... but that's a good bit of money when compared to just replacing the old 6v generator... but who knows...

Could be dirty brushes or commutator on the genny, more likely a bad regulator.

If it is the brushes or commutator thats an easy fix, something more serious like fried windings can be taken care of by any competent auto electrical shop.

If its a regulator, well, there goes $39.95 you'll never see again :(.

To determine where exactly the fault lays you'll need a meter & the FSM troubleshooting procedure. Can't help with the meter but I just happened to find a spare copy of the procedure in my other pair of pants, here it is-

You probably won't have a Growler handy to check the armature, I'd say you're safe just checking that the windings aren't shorted to the metal parts.
The "quick" test is # 8, if the voltage goes up bad regulator, if it doesn't bad genny. Any other questions feel free to ask :).

But if you are bent on keeping it stock, check with some GOOD local machine shops or Electrical Motor rebuilders and get it rebuilt.

That is after you have properly diagnosed the generator as being the culprit.

Y'all are probably right with it being the regulator. The one that's on the jeep is original and in pretty rough shape. I'll check it out to see if that's what it is.

    Thanks again for the advice!

Call around to places that sell old tractor parts. They will probably know someone local that can repair it.

Last month, I switched my 1955 Cj5 or M38A1 the jury is still out on what exactly it is. To 12v system I threw away my generator, because Willys works here in Tucson had so many generators. He didn't want it. So this may be a good place to look. I have walked his yard and he has probably
20 or 30 generators, sitting on pallets. 1 520 888 5082 Willys works. He also has a website, but you'll have to find it through a search
