    Hi All,
I just replaced the thermostat in my 74 CJ5 with 232. I used a Stant 195 deg thermostat. When reviewing my FSM it appears there is a drain hole in the thermostat that needs to be at 12 o'clock when installed. The replacement thermostat does not have this, nor does the one I removed. Is this a big deal?

I just went through that with my 74. The FSM claims it will burp air or something when the thermostat opens. I believe you have the hole in both thermostats. It took me probably an hour and alot of cursing and wondering if I really needed it before I found mine. It wasn't anywhere near the spot that I expected it and the FSM dosn't really have a good pic. It's there, it about the size of a pin (very very small). And the pic in the service manual isn't much of a help so I think your on your own. Just examine the entire thing for a tiny tiny hole. You'll find it. Great, I'm off to change my solenoid in 5 degree weather! Gotta love the Jeep thing.

the hole is probly their to get the air out from behind the t stat so the engine wount over heat before the t-stat gets warm enough to open.
some jap cars have bleader screws to get the air out and if you dont blead them they will over heat and worp the head.

Ford V6s were notorious for this, a little air or steam under the Tstat & it wouldn't open leading to many a cracked block & warped head. This happened on a Bronco II IU had, Twice :(. First symptom- heater suddenly stops working. Second symptom- Steam suddenly coming out the heater vents. Mechanics finally resorted to drilling a hole in replacement T-stats to let the air bleed up through.
