Swap out the oil bath?

What is involved with swapping out the oil bath air filter for a paper element? Are there any benefits to keeping it, or is it fine to swap it out?

 

IMO, an oil covered mesh will catch dirt particles much better than a paper element, so I would keep the oil bath. Cheaper, too.

I guess I'm just lazy and thinking of an easy clean, or change.

 

When I see the crap in the bottom of my oil bath, I don't mind cleaning it at all. Darn glad to have it!

lazy?geese and i thought i was lazy,think about it, it is a extream duty air cleaner,only requiers a little oil, and you never have to worry about if it is in stock,and i shouldnt say this but you probley could go the life of the vehical without ever changing the oil in it <highly not recmonded> do what ever makes you happy,but i would stick with the oilbath

 

Yeak..., it looks like I'll probably keep the oil bath. I guess I should just clean it up and get to work on other things. Thanks for the input.

I like my oil bath air cleaner. The only time I had a problem was following Jim around Borrego, on a real steep hill the oil came out of the filter and ended up all over the inside of the JEEP. Scared the crap right out of me thought I broke something for sure. Mike

 

Well, while I agree that the oil bath filter is a functional design, I have to say there's a reason why new cars use a paper filter

And it's a LOT less messy to change a paper filter than it is to clean out the oil bath

And for really dusty conditions, run an oiled foam overfilter.

Ppilotmike, I think I would have needed to change my shorts if oil suddenly started sloshing into the jeep... I woulda thought the same thing!

 

That's exactly what I did........oil was seeping in through the tranny hump cover.
Took me a minute, I was pretty sure what had happened but couldn't clean my shorts till I looked under the hood.

Ultimately I'd like to keep my housing (it's got that cool Dauntless sticker) and get some kind of element to use with it. Not sure if that is possible though.

 

Come to think of it, sometimes when I turn right, I can smell burning oil. It doesn't happen any other time. I thought it may be coming out of the valve cover, but maybe I have some leakage from the filter area.:?
