fuel pump question.

    I bought a new fuel pump to put in the Dauntless.
    The outlet comes out at a 90 and it is pretty tight to the block and also fairly close to the exhaust.

    The pump on it now exits straight out of the bottom.

    I don't think I will be able to bend anything enough to get it out so I went looking for a fitting to 90 it up (or down) so I would have more room to get to it.
    Seems they don't make a 90 that goes 5/16 flare to 5/16 flare........

    The pump is Napa # M4512.
    I called Autozone and the one they get is the same.

    Can anyone share some tips or pix to help me plumb this thing to the carb? (or a different pump)

    I just always use flex line on the fuel pump.

    I don't know that I have enough room to come straight out and transition to rubber fuel line.
    I was under the impression that steel line was safer/better.

    From what I can tell there are 2 different pumps.

    65-66 (jeep # 6414989) and another for Jeeps 67-73.
    I'm pretty sure that I have the pump (the new one) for the 67-73 range and my engine is a '66.
    Could that be the difference?

    Like I said, I just run rubber line.

    A section from the hard line that comes from the fuel tank, another section to the hard line going to the carburetor.

    I don't see that being unsafe. In fact, it's entirely necessary as the fuel pump I have only has fittings for rubber line, it doesn't have threaded inlets-outlets.

    Not a big deal. Just run it out and around and up to the hard line or whatever. That's the reason for using it. It's flexible.

    I had the same problem with the first pump I bought. I just took it back to my FLAPS and told them I wanted one that exits the bottem,no 90*, and he went in the back and found one. I can check for a part# tomarrow if you like. This was at Carquest by the way.

    Sparky, I have hard line ffom the tank that transitions from taht to rubber at the pump. The return is rubber.
    Then there is a threaded fitting from the pump for the outlet.
    At this point I have hard line (po installed 3/8" soft copper) from the pump to a section of rubber line that goes to an in-line filter then rubber into the carb.

    I am trying to basically keep it the same with a new section of hard line from the pump to the filter.
    I don't think I can screw a fitting into the pump, then transition (using a barbed fitting) into rubber because the way it comes out doesn't leave me with enough clearance.

    I am going to try to find the other pump with the outlet on the bottom.

    Get rid of the copper line at least. Use real automotive brake/fuel line there.

    Mine just runs out, into the filter then up and into a hard line that lays next to the block and then across the top of the intake.

    Fuel pump -> rubber line -> fuel pump -> rubber line -> hard line -> carburetor.

    I'm having difficulty imagining why it's so difficult to replace. :(

    Here's a picture.
    It is the way that the line has to exit the fuel pump.
    I haven't actually tried to install it yet, just kinda held it there but if I can't 90 away from the output it gets too tight to the block/exhaust.........I think.

    I know that the pump on there now has the fuel line exiting from the bottom.

    From what I've seen, the difference between the "newer" pump and the older one is the older pump doesn't have the provision for the return line. Other than that, they look the same.

    Can't remember right now just what mine looks like, but the original was a
    model # "AAC 6440515"
    and when I rebuilt things last year I used that model # to get a new one and it fit right in with no problem and no repiping.

    these pictures show how the original fuel pump was plumbed from the factory. The green pump is original factory. The other is a new replacement pump, ac delco #40515.

    A picture's worth a thousand words:)

    I called Napa and gave them the Jeep part # for the '65/'66 and it came up. They had one in stock........10.00 more then the first one.
    It was listed for a couple different Buicks but not for the Jeep.

    Hopefully it has the return line outlet......

    My next thread will probablyu go into something along the lines of Saginaw steering upgrades.........stay tuned.

    You must have posted that right as I was posting.......What year is that engine?
    I see that there is a shield there, I imagine from the exhaust? I don't see the exhaust manifold in the picture though.
    The inlet and return line go up? Mine go down and run along the frame.

    Remember my Jeep started out as a 4-banger...

    Yes, the heat shield is for the exhaust manifold and pipe. I have headers so they exit to the rear. I left the shield in place just to help protect the pump and lines.

    That particular engine came from a 64 buick special but there was no differance between it and the original other than the smog pump holes in the head. 69 cj5
