Intake heating

does anyone know where I can get a heating element for my 258 intake? Its cold outside and my jeep don't like it! Do the local autopart stores carry them? thanks

I think trying to put a heating element in the intake would be purely a "bandade" fix!! If your carb, choke and warm air intake duct from the exhaust manifold are all in good shape, you shouldn't have any problem. Especially way down there in warm Georgia !!

 

The original manifolds are already heated by the exhaust gases. If you take the manfolds off, you'll find that, where they are bolted together, there is a flap that directs hot exhaust gas against the intake manifold when it's cold outside.

If the flapper is broken, you can look for another one from a used manifold, or switch the manifold entirely. Another possibility is to go to a pair of '81 or later manifolds; the intake in this case has an electric heater which you can connect to a relay and a coolant temperature switch or dash-mounted switch if you think it's needed.

 

That is the problem, I'm running a header so now the intake is sitting out there in the wind. It usually isn't a problem here esp. in the summer but it has been in the 20's every morning for about 3 weeks and it don't like to run. I have seen "heating" elements on the newer intakes that would work just fine. but jeep boneyards are very few here, so I was looking to find one somewhere else. I'm running a man. choke but it pops and spits for the fist 45min. of running.

 

Watch eBay for an '81 or later 2V aluminum intake manifold. It has an electric heater. You'll need to convert to a 2V carb (or use a 1V to 2V adapter) - lots of discussion about 2V carbs if you search.

Maybe just install a coolant heater (block heater) that you can plug in at night. Your engine will be nice and warm when you leave in the morning!
Seems this would be much less complicated and you could keep your header.

 

A simple alternative is to hook up the hot air intake off the bottom of the air cleaner housing snorkle. Take a piece of tubing and attach it to the header so it pulls hot air off the exhaust tubes. I have run this setup for years with success.

 

x2 with gpin. simple, effective, and easy, and you get to keep the headers.

 

The '81-up aluminum manifold will work with the headers. If the headers fit with the 1V manifold, they'll fit with the 2V manifold.

However, a hot air stove will help too. A stock CJ has both the manifold heater and the TAC (thermostatic air cleaner).

 

thanks guys, i think I'm going to hit another bone yard, rumor has it there is an '81 cj there with a complete motor. then I think I will contact that guy on e bay for a motorcraft 2100 set up. I know it will cost a few $ but in the long run I think it will be worth it.

 

If your just taking the manifold, the the oil pressure switch and sending unit on the other side also.
