I went to a yard sale today and found a set of original split bench seats for my Willys CJ-5, but he also had a 1/2 cab soft top in military green canvas. It is in rough shape and the doors need to be completely redone, but it fits pretty good. I was just wondering if the canvas 1/2 cab would be original equipment, or aftermarket, and how rare is it? I cant recall ever seeing one before.

Yup, original, Snatch It Up Quick, Very Rare. The factory soft tops could be configured as 1/2 tops or full tops. Even if the canvas is shot the bows are rare to find & the canvas can be used as a pattern for a replacement covering.

    See here-

    http://www.beachwoodcanvas.com/store/

Section 23, pg. 9 for details on the configurations. If you want to give yourself a good scare call'em up & ask about prices:twisted:

And heres a picture of the spare tire carrier... Is this a OEM carier? It is intergral with a trailer hitch.

There is a man here that has an M38A1 with a canvas half cab. Honestly I know there are a few out there but that is the only one I've ever seen. That is a nice lookin JEEP.

Good deal on the bench seats, and you hit the jackpot on the 1/2 top. The spare tire carrier would originally be bolted on the passenger side behind the wheel well. Nice JEEP! :) :hurrican:

    :?

Would you guys really consider a soft-top "OEM"? I always consider soft-tops more "dealer-installed".

Might just be picking nits....but none of the pics that I can remember seeing of Jeeps coming out of the factory on the way to dealerships had tops of any sort on them.

But I have little knowledge of the military side of things - which this looks to be.

The Meyer steel cab could be sourced from the factory. You can tell a factory cab because it does not have latches on the windshield, instead it has plates. The Jeep mechanics said that their installations fit better than the factory's though. The dealership I worked at (Chuchua's in CA) never ordered a factory hard top AFAIK, though I did see one come in for service. Probably a more popular option in the snow belt.

Re the soft top, AFAIK it was always dealer installed. This was a better arrangement becasue it made the Jeeps on the dealer's lot more adaptable to the user's needs.

Not 'OEM' but instead 'period correct.'

If something was a factory approved accessory, by a factory approved manufacturer, but installed by a dealer wouldn't it be OEM?

Mmm, terminology. Not 'factory' but 'OEM?' Not sure what to call 'factory-approved accessory dealer-installed at time of purchase'? OEM is probably correct since you could buy the stuff across the dealer's parts counter.

"Depends on what the meaning of "is", is....:D

To me - OEM means "built and installed at factory".

    :iagree:

Original Equipment (from) Manufacturer, not Original Equipment (from) Dealer

That would mean every part at the dealer is not OEM since it would have to be installed by the dealer or owner?

    Here is my 2 cents.
OEM should be any part that is in the Jeep part lists for your particular vehicle, whether the factory installs it or not should not make a difference.

Factory installed equipment and Dealer installed equipment should be different categories.

I think it's clear we're not talking about a 1:1 replacement part for what came on the Jeep from the factory, we're talking about accessories.

'Zactly what I've been saying all along - just my word for "Factory installed equipment" is "OEM"...;)

I'd say the soft tops fall into "OEM", they're in the parts manual, the brackets are definitely factory installed & the tops were made to Willys specs either for or by Willys.

The 1/2 top isn't a military item, it's strictly a civvy thing for the CJs. Even the CJ full tops were a completely different design from the military ones.
