Would anyone care to share pics of how you have mounted 8274's? I don't want to sink it between the framerails and im looking for a solution thats not going to break that bank... any imput would be really appreciated :)

Pretty much you just buy a mount of make a mount from 3/16 or 1/4 inch palte steel that is bent in a 90 degree angle. you bolt the winch to the veritcal part and bolt the horizontal part to the frame rails.

I know that Summit Racing haas winch mount plates. I don't know if they have them for that winch. Doesn't it have mounting holes on the front instead of the bottom?

Sure does, itsa goffy looking mount. The Factory Warn plate runs right at $100 (US) for the CJ, over $200 for the YJ.

    Andy,
Congrats on your new (used) winch. IMHO, you couldn't have gotten a better winch to compliment the front end of your CJ.

I'd give you my winch mount if you were closer! My 8074 came mounted in it to place into a 2" receiver hitch. Whoever built it went way overboard with 3/8" plate steel and it's seriously HEAVY!

But like Dan stated....it would be best for you to go down to your local steel supplier and get a piece of 1/4" or 5/16" (I personally wouldn't reccomend 3/16") plate cut and then bent 90 degree to accomodate your winch. You could then drill 4 mount holes (it does mount on the front vertical) and either weld or bolt it across your front frame rails. Pretty simple installation on a CJ with the extended frame rails/recessed grill out front.

    Good luck!

I bought a used 8274 with a warn mount for a '72-'75 CJ5. It had the angle plate, and also 2 angled side plates to mount through the side framerails. I'm not using the side mounts on the Jeepster.

I found this pic on the web, it is the same mount I have. You can see the side brackets in this pic. (The rusty parts)

I built mine years ago, my frame is custom up front allowing me a flat surface to mount to, so I just had a piece of metal bent in a 90, then welded some gussets on the sides. I also remember it flexing so I added that big solid piece across the top, you can see it in the pic.
I wanted easy removal because when I sand dune I didn't need it, so I bolted mine to my reinforced front cross member with 4 5/8 flanged frame bolts. Works good for me. They are a great winch. Makes the front of your jeep ride smoother with all that weight up there, but does block some radiator cooling air. You will like!

It really is just a bent piece of steel with four holes on the front, and two gussets. There is a picture of the mounting holes on the Warn website. I bought mine at a swap meet for 10 bucks. One warning is that the first time my wife saw the winch mounted, she asked "Won't that block all the air from the radiator?" It does run about 5 degrees warmer in the summer.

Honestly yours is my favorite jeep on this forum. thanks for the pics... originally i didnt want to sink the winch between the frame rails because i am planning on a saggy swap soon, but it looks like you made it work. really nice work on the whole bumper... i really like that stinger.

I have to agree, looks very nice and thought out. My winch was kind of an afterthought, one of those deals I couldn't pass up, so it was installed after the frame was done.
Not related, but one of these days all the guys around the Spokane area are going to have to meet up!

Thank you. Glad to help. Oh and the steering box I used is from a Cherokee '84-'89. Easy to find and cheap. With a brace, plenty strong for 33" and smaller tires IMHO. I'm not sure but the four bolt saggy box might be too wide for this winch location.
The stinger I found at local Pull&Save for $8. LOL It is from one of the little foriegn suv's, like Rocky, Amigo or something. It had 2 doors with a removable rear half roof top. A rear bench seat with a hoop on each side for upper shoulder belt mounts. My stinger is the hoop. Good heavy DOM tubing and looks cool but of question-able value.

If you stop and think about, it the lower you mount the winch.....it will help pull it up and out, saw guys almost pull the winch off the frame because of that! I mounted my 8274 through the front bumper!
I also agree..willysworker, you DO do nice work, I like the U bolt plates and am going to do something similar on the rebuild.

My 3B album has some jpgs showing how I mounted a 5721, which uses the same mounts. I did not want something that was going to restrict air flow to the radiator so made it as minimal as I could. The bumber between the fram rails is boxed with 1/4 plate, including the winch cable slot.
