Problems caused by running rich?

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

What effect would running an engine very, very rich have on components. My float started leaking and I drove home. Everything is fixed now, it idles great, but when you give it gas at at cruising speeds, usually in second and third, the engine misses. I hope its not the clutch slipping but it feels more like cylinders not firing. I changed the points. I'm wondering if driving with the engine running so rich would require me to change any damaged components such as spark plugs?

What do you mean by float leaking?

Rich fuel/air mixture will foul the spark plugs fast. You'll get soot in the valves, pistons, and exhaust. That missing very well could be just too much fuel; if it is bad enough you could be flooding the motor.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks yet?

running rich will cause spark plugs to faul but it should all clean out after you get the carb fixed you may want to chang oil if you ran it for a long time too rich. a old trick to get the carbon off the internal motor parts is to hold the engine at a high idle and mist water down the carb with a spray bottle then drive it at good rpms for 20 min or so. you only need to use 1/2 pint of water. I have done this but dont know if it realy helped that much. I figered misting water in the motor and running it to get it all out couldnt hurt. you must mist the water so you dont hydro lock the motor and that will dammage the motor BAD.

Thats what I figured, the plugs would get sooty, but then would clean up once the engine is running right. Actually, the entire Carter YF carb is brand new. I just put it on a few days ago. I know the idle mixture is adjusted perfectly (with a vaccum gauge) and I know the idle speed is perfect (750RPM). Those were the only two adjustments I made. Did I miss something? It idles great, but when in second or third, under load, it bucks a little. The only thing thats changed between then and now, is the float in my old carb got a leak and sunk a little. I drove it home with gas soaking everything. Then I threw on a new carb. Actually, there are two lines on the carb that seem to be vaccum lines. I think ones connected to the vaccum advance on the distibutor and the other one was always plugged off. If I mixed these two up would it cause this? I plugged the one lowest to the base which is the one I thought was plugged (could be wrong).

If by "closest to the base" you mean the the nipple on the carb that points roughly toward the No. 1 or No. 2 sparkplug, that port is identified as the "spark port" in my 1974 FSM. The port immediately above the idle mixture needle is identified in the FSM as the "EGR port".

People have told me, and I have read, that a plug can become hopelessly fouled in 15 minutes, although my experience with two previous Jeeps did not indicate that this was a problem with Jeeps.

Part throttle fuel delivery is primarily controlled by the metering rod assembly and vacuum appplied to the accelerator pump diaphragm asssembly and the accelerator pump springs, upper and lower. However, bucking in 2nd or 3rd gear is also sometimes symptomatic of pending fuel filter blockage and I can't remember whether you replaced your filter or not when you did the carb replacement.

In any event, good luck figuring it all out.

    sac13 Come oooonnnnn summer....

Until I get my over-cfm'd issue resolved, I clean my plugs every 100 miles or so (excuse to go in the garage when the kids act up). Once they are cleaned up, she runs great again for another 100 or so. I do see any major long term damage, other than the damaged brain cells when I forget to open the garage door before I start it!!! Then again, can't be any worse than  !!
