I removed my poorly designed (and rotten) paper defrost duct and ordered a new one this weekend. After driving for about 30 minutes without it, my radio started acting up. After sitting for a bit, it won't even turn on now. Here is what I'm wondering: Since I removed the duct, the hot air bleed from the heater through the defrost opening in the unit shoots directly onto the back of the radio. Does the heat get hot enough to melt something in the radio? I'm going to remove the radio and bench test it tonight but I was just wondering.......

it very well might be your problem. run the radio with out the motor going and see if it still does it that should tell you it the heat is doing it, and if it dont turn on you may have blowen or melted something inside. a multimeater and a testing power supply seem to be in order

    good luck

I got really lucky. It's about the only thing the PO had working (that sound you hear is me knocking on wood). Even on 20deg days, it kicks out mega heat. I managed to get all the door's unstuck and the cables free'd up. Does anyone have any expirience with the aftermarket floor ducts that supposedly just attach to bottom of the existing unit? It would be nice to have the heat directed at my feet instead of keeping the shifter warm!!

The more I think about it, the more I think I fried something in the back of the radio. I will find out tonight!

It's possible that you did fry something from the heater flow, but that seems somewhat suspect. The reason I say that is, is your heater output hotter than the inside of a black car that's been sitting in the sun for hours in the Las Vegas summer? :? (Now THAT'S hot!)
Good luck with the bench test, tho.

The usual culprit will be a power transistor that uses the back of the radio case for a heat sink...

Well, it's official. My radio is toast (literally!). I bench tested it and it won't power up. I'll tear it apart and see if anything looks obvious, if not, it's time to go shopping........
