I have been told the Ross boxes differ between 4cyl and 6cyl models, the gear ratio is different, the 6cyl box is easier to steer. OK, my question is, if I had only one box in front of me how could I tell which one I had?

I'm serious about the boxes, any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks; Doug

OK maybe it's too early to see the difference. They look the same to me other than one is a mini-me. Would it be possible to place a ruler across the larger one, so there would be no doubt as to which one I'm holding?

    Thanks; Doug

that is an old pic, I don't have the 4 cyl box and the 6 is in the $ sink. measure the distance between the bolt heads. the 6 is a square, the 4 is a rectangle

    A minor hijacking-

Isn't the 6 cyl. version the same one that was used on M38A1s?

Near as I can tell, that's a big YUP, but the length of the worm shaft's are different, at least that's what I heard when I went searching for a new one a few years ago.

Thanks, you and your pic's were very helpfull. I was able to figure out I have the smaller 4cyl box. The reason I removed it was due to very sloppy steering. Come to find out some PO, due to the square bolt pattern, was able to put the cover on upside-down, thus no adjustment was possible. It works great now!!!!
    Thanks again, Doug

OK, seeing you went to all the trouble to help me I went back out to the shop and did the most accurate bench test I could do.
I put the box in a vise and it turned four complete turns stop to stop.
