    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

First off I am very embaressed to ask this question but can not figure it out on my own. I rewired the engine compartment of my dauntless because the alternator wasn't charging. Now the engine won't shut off. I don't understand, it seems very simple. I have a wire going from ign. on the switch, through a ballast resistor, to the pos. on the coil. I verified that with the switch off, the coil gets no juice and with the switch in run, it gets 12v. Then why when I turn the switch off, the engine still runs? There are no other wires going to the pos. coil

Most likely the alternator is back feeding the ignition circuit - I had the same thing happen after I replaced the alternator - the voltage regulator circuit was wired differently in the rebuilt alternator -
Double check your alternator wiring - my 0.02-

Did you put a Motorola back in? There is a thread about this when chaning over to a Delco and the need for a diode to stop the feedback. Try a search.

Strider380 Here is a quick and dirty of what i did when i was having the same problem.

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

Sounds like my problem! I did rewire the alternator completly. And the old wiring did shut off, but didn't charge. Before I install the diode, anyone know off the top of their head the correct wiring for a 10si? This is what I did. The #1 terminal just gets a switch line from IGN on the ignition switch. The #2 terminal is just jumpered over to the battery terminal. I don't have these backwards, do I? Thanks again guys, its a little reasuring to see that I'm not the only one who is obsessed enough with old jeeps to maintain one.

And one more thing, how do you guys stall out the jeep? I've been pulling the coil wire off the distributor cap and getting whacked everytime. then watching the sparks as I accidently drop it on the engine block:rofl:

Yup you got it backwards........#1 is for the light
    #2 goes to the battery

well not really backwards but, disconnect #1 it should not be connected to the ign switch

I was just putting it in third and holding the brake in while easing the clutch out at an idle.

Not real sure but I think indirectly it does connect to the ignition switch but through the charging indicator (amp light). Could directly connect to the alternator but I think it would need an inline resistor. Yes, no?

    Good question

IIRC the 10si Grounds the light.........

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

Yea, I thought #1 was suppose to be switched too. But different sites I read conflict each other between what goes to the 1 and 2 terminal so I'm not very clear. I think #1 is suppose to be switched tho. So voltage must be getting from the #1 terminal, up the line to the switch, where it is gained at the ign terminal with the pos. coil line. Would a simple solution be an auxillary switch that goes from the battery to the pos. coil rather then having it go through the ignition switch?

#1 should go to a light (idiot light) negitive......the positive for the light should be switched from the ign switch.........let me find a pic

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

Yeap, I've seen that pic many times. Does it matter if I don't have the idiot light in there and its just a wire going from #1 to the ign switch?

Yup sure does........remember that the #1 from the alt acts as a ground to light the light.......so if you dont want the light to work dont connect #1 to anything

Uh huh. Well sounds like that might be the problem. Let me go try... I don't need that light. When my voltmeter drops from 15 to 13, I know theres a problem.

The charge light comes on when the charge voltage is less than battery voltage, or the reverse. The battery light is controlled by a "bucking voltage". I gets voltage from the battery on one side, and the alternater on the other side. If there is a big difference on one side or the other, the light will come on.

Well, now it shuts off but it won't charge. I thought the #1 terminal excited the alternator so it started charging? I know on my other Jeep (CJ5), you've gotta rev it to probably 1200RPM to get it to start charging. I reved it (m38a1) and it didn't start charging. Tho it dosn't have a tach and has headers with no exhaust pipe, so I don't know what RPM its at, just that its really loud.

I must have to put that bulb in. I just never saw what the difference was between having a bulb there and not.

Go to the madelectrical.com site, it explans wiring the alternator and has an easy to use diagram.
