First question is whether it is an F-head or a flat head.

When you pull the side valve cover under the carb there will be all the lifters/valve stems. On the lifter there are 2 nuts that you spin to adjust them.

This is where some one like me chimes in and suggests to get a manual. Seriously, buy a Chilton, Haynes, or shop manual. It will give you not only exploded diagrams, but step by step instructions on how to do it.

i can see its pretty to adjust the valves, but am i going to have to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds to do this. looks like there pretty hard to get to, i thought about removing the fender to reach in there.

Do you have a F head (valve cover on top) or Lhead (flat head) B/c if you have a F head you shouldnt have to remove the intake?

It's not easy, but really not too difficult to do without removing anything. Removing the fender might make it easier, but I don' think I'd remove the manifolds & wreck the gasket for that.
Incidentally, the F-head doesn't have a seperate intake manifold. BW

yeah i went back and took a closer look at the manifold, looks like the joined together. ill try the fender removal idea. this jeep belongs to a friend, mine is a 55 M38A1 with a 350 sbc and a warn overdrive, but this one is kinda of fun to work on.
