my friend has a 53 willys and i would like to mount a 5 gallon jerry can. he has the spare tire mounted on the right rear side and im looking for some insight as where to mount the gas can, he has a tailgate and it looks like the can can might be to wide to mount on the rear corner. any ideas where to mount it. pictures would be helpful.

Possibly a mount on one of the rear fender wells? Or make a swing out tire carrier that can hold both the tire and a jerry can? That would also move the tire off the side, so if he does any offroading he wont have to worry about hitting it on something...

1952 M38A1-C had a big gun in the rear, so the gas can mounted just in front of the passenger door, high on the side of the cowl. You could google up some images, no doubt.

But I second Neptco - here in NH we don't like any extra width to catch on trees.

I'd discard the can idea and mount a second tank under the rear floor. Plenty of info available here about that - the stock Jeep tank from later models fits nicely.

Either that or buy/make a swing-out carrier. Check the members here, or eBay or Willystech, for a used one.

Sorry it's so blury, but it's just bolted to the gate. This will change after the rebuild, I'm putting bolts where the chains are and adding a rear tire mount.

blurry or not, thats what id like to set his jeep up like. he already has the tailgate bolted. but it would be a good idea to mount the spare tire on the back, like your going to do. ill have to talk to him about mounting it back there, besides having everything out of the way it looks better.

The M38s had a bolted tailgate that mounted the gas can & spare but they had additional ribs on the inside to handle the load. Discussed here on the CJ3B page. The repro gate I got for Tonk way-back-when actually seems to be a copy of the M38 unit, I can take pics of the reinforcing ribs if you'd like-

Good question. I have been wondering where to put mine as well. That link to the 3b page has some good info on it.

As Howard said, also on the CJ2A Page some one showed, maybe 3" or 4" X 3/16" (guessing) strips on the inside of the tailgate to distribute the weight. www.walcks4wd.com has the tire mounts as well as Beachwood.

I had spare 7.50/16 & gas can mounted on a repro M38 gate on my 3B, gate bolted, all that--- pulled the RR corner of the body loose from the inner fender. I now have a swing-away mount that carries not only the spare & can, but ax & shovel as well. Mounts to the X-member with the hitch. BW
