I have points! Is the 75 suppossed to have points on the 304 or not? If not I guess some one swapped out the 304 for an older one?

So I have been getting into the CJ, along with driving it a bit more. I replaced the Cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I tried to get a cap and rotor at the local Napa, they did not have what I thought I needed..... Ended up bringing them back, I drove the CJ in so they could take a look. One guy said it was the same as an older chevy....what did I know....? ended up matching the parts that were on there.

Running nice at the moment, I will get a dwell meter and replace the points and condensor next.

Its possible someone replaced the original with an older points model, 75 was one of first years with electronic ingiton and they had a lot of trouble with them.

No - you should have the Prestolite electronic ignition.

A points distributor from an earlier AMC V8 will drop right in though. You should be able to use ignition parts for a '72 or '73 CJ, for example.

    Do you want electronic ignition?

    OK, thanks for the reply's.

As for if I want electronic ignition. Yes, eventually.

The spark has to be pretty decent at the moment. From the old plugs I pulled the spark had to be pretty good to fire those....

I am ordering all new wheel cyl's and bearings shortly to get things rolling and stopping better. I'll look at the shoes and drums while I am in there. I took it for a little 4x4 intro on my property yesterday, a couple of steep hills. It ran ok, the carb is really rich. It also popped out of 4wd twice while in low range.....? So i'll look into that a bit.

Thanks again for the good info!

Don't spend any money going back to Prestolite. Convert to Pertronix, GM HEI, or Ford Duraspark from a '78 or late AMC V8. Ask again when you're ready to go forward, or search the net - lots of info available.
