Well I'm finally getttin' ready to tear into the SM420 that was sittin' out back my uncle's house for years. My transmission rebuild buddy is tellin' me shouldn't be too much to worry about as long as it hasn't filled with water, then rusted and pitted the gears.

My question is, is that common? It looks pretty sealed up to me, however it certainly has been rain on a few times.

    Thanks guys

Only way to tell is to pull the shift tower off and give it a looksy. Wont take but a min. to do it. Id def. do that before ordering a rebuild kit. Plus you can check it out and see if you'll need any hard parts like gears to replace if they are chipped....

They do that in a topless JEEP that is sitting, so "sittin out back" can't be much better

The water from rain can follow the shift stick down, through the top and into the tranny. Pull the cover first. Even if there is some surface rust try flushing it out thoroughly before condemning anything or take it apart and clean all parts thoroughly. Sometimes trannys that look like a junk pile inside can be cleaned up and you find the parts are still serviceable. Nickmil
