friend of mine has an old flat fender jeep, flat head 4 banger. the problem is when it first starts it will fall on its face and die if you give it gas, unless you keep the choke on. after it warms up, 20-30 minutes, then i can push the choke in and it will do alright but still if you give it gas to quick it will die. i looked down the carb, throat and cant see any kind of gas squirting out when i open the throttle. i can se a rod on the outside that might go so some kind of accelerator but dont know. do these old carbs have a accelerator pump on them.

thats what i thought. guess even the old flat heads needed a accelerator pump in there carb. do you know of any good place to buy a rebuild kit for an old carb like this.

Whether it is the accelerator pump or something else, a carb rebuild is not a bad idea. There are other things that could cause problems like this, but the carb rebuild is a good place to start.

Just be sure to take a little extra time to do all the adjustments and blow out all the passages in the carb.

Don't try to mix and match parts with another carb -- stick with the one you have.

And the advice to use the carburetor shop is good. It is the only place where you can get the right parts in a kit.

None of the other jeep vendors apparently care enough to sell a good kit for the 4 cylinder jeeps.

Just a little side note: Check out the float when you are rebuilding the carb. I've had issues with the float getting gas in it, after a rebuild. (Mine is a Carter W/O carb.)

I recently got lucky and found a NOS W/O carb to keep on hand as a spare. If you have an opportunity to pick up a spare, it will keep your Willys on the road since those carbs are so easy to swap out!

a local shop is getting me the kit tomorrow. and yeah ive had problems in the past with the floats leaking and filling up with gas. ill make sure i check it. we have some old shops here that can get anything. one of them even had a set of 47 brake shoes in stock. i noticed when i removed the carb that there is a piece of angle metal pushed into the intake throat, guess someone figured it would help with the gas atomizing, doesn't look stock, in fact i think its aluminum.

I have a friend with multiple old jeeps and swears by the Solex replacement carbs you can get new for about $125.00

You should hear those babies run. Talk about smooth and even,

they idle down and never a hesitation.

Of course they dont look original with all that shiney metal and all.

Just depends on what a guy wants I guess. Doug

There is an adjustment on the needle under the cap. You can adjust it so you can get more fuel quicker or less if you need less. It takes several tries to get it right.

There is supposed to be a V shaped piece of metal in the throat that is part of the gasket between the carb and the manifold. I don't know the part number offhand, but I think that is the "piece of angle metal" you are refering to. The V piece is shaped in such a way to create a vortex of the gas / air mixture as it leaves the carb.

Are they getting the kit from the Carburetor Shop? If not you're setting yourself up for trouble.

To the best of my knowledge as I stated, no one but the Carburetor Shop offers the correct kit.

yeah i found it at karge, its a diffuser baffle. i found a web site that goes into great detail on rebuilding and setting the old carter wo carb up. the adjustment your talking about i think is for setting the metering rod. at least thats all i can find out about it, nothing about setting the accelerator pump travel. it idles and revs fine, just died when trying to accelerate. found that the accelerator pump was worn out and not squirting. also took the carb completely apart and cleaned everything. i am missing the metering rod spring. it suppose to keep downward tension on the metering rod but let it lift up when you close throttle. it wasn't on the carb when i took it apart. i think i might be able to figure out some way to rig up a spring to put tension on it, im figuring it doesn't come in the kit. ill find out tomorrow when i get it.

    Way to go hotrod351!

I'd still keep a lookout for a spare W/O Carb for spare parts.
(Send me a PM if you are having trouble with your adjustments & settings. I have an original Carter spec sheet for the W/O in my collection of Willys brochures.)
