Just curious. I've known there was some writing on my firewall for some time. Could never quite make out what it was until tonight. Now I've got my carb, wiring, ballast resistor, etc all pulled off, and I can clearly see it says "75". It's yellow grease pencil, like a salvage yard would use, except this is definitely not a '75 tub. The ballast resistor was installed right over top of the "7", so it's reasonable to assume it was written when the tub was off. I confirmed with my wire brush tonight that it is written over top of original paint. I don't see how it could be possible, but could this be some kind of assembly line notation that has survived 36 years, like this was the 75th vehicle on the line in JUN 1970?

While I was sandblasting some fenders here at work one day I noticed some #s like your seeing and wondering the same thing. I cant remember what the numbers were though.

It's not as bad as it looks. It's the previous owner's chafe guard because it was too close to the oil filter. I've got a new hose that I'm hoping will clear the filter better.

I've got a book on restoring classic muscle cars, and they mention taking detailed pictures of markings like that so they can be reproduced after the new paint is sprayed, so I'd guess it's probably not that uncommon on older cars. Afraid I don't have a clue what it would mean. Maybe it was how many days the guy putting on the tubs had left before retirement :) .

Good question. I've always wondered about that myself.

    sure it's possible
grease pencil never really goes away...
as a kid, I wiped a lot of those writings off
the new Jeeps would come in with a spray white wax sprayed all over them to protect the paint during transit
my job was to eliminate that wax
    it was waterproof
that meant, hand rubbing/wiping with soft, clean, rags
under the hood was wiped down as well
who knows what it really means...

I can tell you that where I used to work (when I had a job) the MRB parts (defective at factory -- Material Review Board) were marked.

So this jeep may have had to have some rework done before it was shipped. This could be an inspectors number or a code of some sort.

And it may not be the body tub that had a problem, if the tub was mounted prior to the inspection.

Not uncommon to discover defective, but repairable, parts at the factory.

I'd bet that it's an inspectors number from when the tub went down the assembly line. Writing like that is common on any older vehicle

Things like that are common on cars from the 60's etc. As I understood it they were sign offs for quality control etc. Even new cars have stickers or dots of colored paint on the rear end and such.

Thats not duct tape common mistake though.
Aluminum heat sink tape is often mistaken for duct tape.
Each wrap around the hose reduces rad. temp by 75 degrees

No, it actually is just plain ol' duct tape, and it is just there to prevent rubbing a hole in the hose due to friction from the oil filter.

What's wrong with you guys. That code is for the duct tape.
PS, get a smaller filter like I did.
