whats this annoying tickin sound

so i get the jeep back together and after a couple of miles it starts ticking just behind the block inside the bellhousing but closer to the fly wheel. could it be the plate between the engine and bell house? btw i have a 258 with a 4 speed any help would be apprieciated

 

Boy - that's a tough one, IMO. Almost impossible without actually hearing it...

Are you sure it isn't a lifter at the back of the engine? Otherwise, I wouldn't think it's the plate between the block and flywheel, since the bellhousing bolts go *though* that plate. I can't see how it would move or make any noise.

 

Yep, that is a tough one. My first thoughts would be a lifter ticking as well. Also, I have heard the TOB's on some newer ones that make kinda an annoying ticking sound when it's idling in neutral and it seems to be normal from what some of the TJ guys have told me, but I wouldn't think that would be the case on your Jeep. Easiest way to see if it's that is to push the clutch in and see if it stops doing it. As far as it ticking while you are driving it though, a lifter is about the only thing I can think of unless you have an exhaust leak at the manifold.

 

Just a WAG. Is it possible you might have a bolt that's just a little bit too long installed someplace, that's just barely nicking something that's turning? Maybe one of the bolts that holds the pressure plate to the flywheel is going too far through the flywheel and hitting something? Did you change out the old bolts with new ones?

 

I had a similar problem which turned out to be caused by the removable section on the bottom of the bellhousing spacer plate being installed incorrectly. It was not placed under the tabs properly and it was out of alignment just enough to lightly touch the flywheel. I would have thought that it would have made a constant scraping sound, but it only ticked. Possibly a high point on the flywheel or ring gear.
Something worth looking at anyway.

With the clutch in or out?

Clutch In: Clutch plate being pushed to far in. Hitting Flywheel:

With clutch out?
Spring in clutch are damaged.

Hope I am wrong both ways.

Of course could be a exhaust leak that you did not hear before because other things are making more noise.

Maybe record it and post it?

I vote for the inspection plate hitting the flywheel. Pry on it with a screwdriver.

Just installed a new clutch last night and when I was done, mine did the same thing.

Pressure plate hitting bellhousing.

I drove it until it stop ticking.

I found the spot on the bell housing it was hitting. Only about 1/4 inch long and looks like it only took .001 inch off so I am happy.

It took about 2 miles to stop the ticking.

My new pressure plate was longer but the same width so I was not too worried.
