A few body features on my cj5 I can't figure out why their there.
On the passenger side of the hood, whats the cut out for?
both sides above the rear fenders is some indentation what is the purpose for them? And lastly the covered rectangular spot on top of the firewall in front of the windshield? air intake?
I'm just curious about these things

The hood cut out was for the snorkle for the air intake, the rectangle piece on the cowl was the battery box, and the indents in the rear sides were for the soft top bows. This is all leftover military stuff...

Thats a nice jeep you have. The rectangular spot is for the heater I believe. Not sure tho cause I've never had a functioning heater, but it only comes on later jeeps that would have heaters installed.

No the rectangular spot was a hold over for the battery as Patrick said, the heater would have been mounted on the drivers side firewall.

Doesn't your M38A1 have the rectangular cover for the battery box? Yours should be functional, the one on a 5 is spot welded in place.

Yeah, the M38's and M38A1's had a functional battery box on the cowl. The lid was hinged and there were two 12 volt batteries in there. The CJ5's just have a dummy cover welded on there.

Oh, I figured his wouldn't have the battery hatch since it was a CJ5. I thought he was talking about that rectangle in the center thats covered with a grill. I believe this is some type of intake for the blower or something?...Oh wow, looking at the picture I completly missed the battery hatch in the back. I only saw the snorkel cutout. Sorry guys! And yes, Mine is fully functional, though I can't fit any batteries in it because its to thin. I am going to start welding a makeshift battery holder today.
