Haven't poked my head onto the board in awhile. Hi to those that I've never conversed with.

I scored a nw hard top and had to redo the bumper to allow me to open the back hatch. Ended up making a swing down style bumper. It stops level and can be used as a seat if one so desires.

Obviously it still needs to be cleaned up a bit.

    Cheers, Jon

Looks sweet Jon, I wish I could weld a bead and nice as those. Are those done with a stick, mig/tig machine? I do have one question, how will you keep the rack vertical with the spare tire installed. Does it attach to the tail gate or back panel. Great job!

    Thanks guys.

There are two pieces of 3/8" welded behind the vertical upright. One is on the upright, the other on the bumper. A 1/2" hole is drilled through both pieces. When a hardened 1/2" pin slides through the holes, the carrier remains upright. The test will take place once the tire is on. May need to reinforce a bit, but maybe not :) I'll get a shot of the 3/8" piece up this evening.

Welds are MIG, Miller 210 burning .035.

    Edit: 3/8" not 1/4"

Thx much, this board has really grown in a good way and the folks here have taught me a lot about Jeeps.

    On the steel:

The main 2x4, the 2x2 upright and the round tube are all 11ga (1/8"). The shackle mounts are 1" that was lying around, They were cut in and welded front and back. The plate that bolts the bumper to the center area of the frame and the tire mouting plate are 1/4". The wings (for lack of a better term) that fit up along the outside of the frame rails are 3/16.

A few pics of carrier lock are shown below. Despite using 3/8 steel and a 1/2" hardended pin, I beleive this is still the weak point if a heavy tire is tossed up there. I'm still bouncing around ideas for a rack that would bolt onto the bumper and then attach up near the rear corners of the body to stabilize it (picture a basket up above the tire). If necessary, I'll incorporate something in the rack mount that will pin the top part of the tire carrier and eliminate any jiggles.

Oiless compressors fear me because of the load I put on the them and my ears fear them.

I scored that IR a year or so ago from Sears who had it on close out w/a broken pressure guage. They threw in the synthetic IR oil and made a heck of a deal to get it off their floor. Something I learned at the Sears Tool Dept that day -- If the sale item ends with 88 cents, it indicates the item is being discontinued and the sales folks will cut a further deal on it to get it out of there.

I converted that thing to hydro last year. I use it a lot and was sick of pulling on the handle in all sorts of weather with the door open. What used to take 15 minutes now takes 23 seconds. There's a guy that goes by the name of Cebby on POR - I used his basic idea and parts list to convert it. Hoses were built locally; the ram, pump and 2-way valve all came from Northern. Bender itself is the Pro-Tools HD105.

    :) Thx

Nice bumper. You might want to put that hydro set up on there to pick up your swing down tire. What size tire do have on your spare?
