My 55 is in need of new body mounts. It looks like the original was a rectangular piece of rubber and asbestos... or something between the body and the frame. I've seen the body mount kits and they are all using the round poly cushions.

?????? I fear TinyWil (that's my Jeep's name) might have metal fatigue if all the pressure is put in such a small area. MY jeep came from a snow state and has some rust.... Anyone got any ideas on a flat material, like the original, that can be used?

I've got plenty of time to muscle off the mounting bolts, now that the prospecting season of coming to a close.

I bought the poly set for my 69. I am replacing all the rusty parts underneath before I put it back together though. I have seen guys cut up old tires for body mounts when I lived in South Africa, Maybe try that??? :?

I used pieces of horse trailer floor mat material when I did a frame-up on my '68. There was a horse trailer manufacturer who sold me some scraps. Tough as nails and worked great. I used the 1/2" stuff which gave me just the amount of body lift I was wanting, and it really did improve the ride quality.
If you have a Les Schwab tire store near you check with them too. They make bed mats for pickups out of the same stuff. Maybe you can locate some scraps. Just an idea.

I use belting left overs from a fruit packing house lots of them around here where I am at. 1/8 to about 3/8 thick is readily available, super tough rubberlike material with a woven layer of cloth in the middle.

a good heavy mud flap works well too. I went to Napa and picked up a real heavy truck mud flap...then took a hole saw and drilled out a bunch of round mounts. They work well and seem to be really tough.

IMHO you're worrying too much. THe difference in contact area using the poly bushings won't be that much different than the original rubber pieces. If some of your mount areas are rusted, you're better off doing some repairs anyway.

I had to do this on my CJ6:

Thanks Guys for all your ideas...

I'll take pictures and post them in the spring. I'm going to unbold the body and lift it enough to see what kind of rust damage I have.

AFAIK in '55 there shoudn't be anything in there except for 1/8" thick canvas welting squeak eliminators. My '59 parts manual shows them as part #A-4414, "Liner- Body Sill", 10 required. The thicker "puck" style mut have shown up later than that.

Frankly the canvas wasn't a great idea, held moisture & promoted rust :(.
I have a set of the proper ones but I'm still debating wheter or not I'm going to use them>

I picked up some 3/8 thick rubber matting from Menards that should work.

X2 here, but all of the ideas mentioned will work. I use hockey pucks for mounts for just about everything nowadays though.

I guess I should have asked if this was a restoration or just a rebuild. AFAIK the pucks were never used at all on ECJs - at least my '64 had the rubber strips yet. I just saw the poly approach as an upgrade.

Worked on body mounts last night.
Bias ply tire with 2" hole saw and plenty of 2" fender washers and 3/8 hardware. seems to work fine.

Where did you find a lookalike of 53m38a1 to stand in there for that picture? I thought he was a ghost now. Maybe that's after this weekend.

Sections of tire is what Willys and K-J used. They aren't asbestos - that's the cording in the sections of old tire. I remember putting the tire sections away in the Jeep dealer's parts department - a brown lunch sack full of rectangles cut from tires, some still had tread on them. Two thicknesses.

When I looked at the ones (that are still there) on my '55 CJ5 I made a mental note that they did look like pieces of tire. Guess I might have found a use for the old trailer tires the PO left at my house when we moved in. :)
