    Hi:

I have a 79CJ5 w/a T-150 3 speed Transmission. It was recently rebuilt along with the clutch and clutch linkage. The jeep shifts pretty well on the road. Every now and then it gets locked up when I start out from my driveway. It will grind when I try to put it in R or 1st. My driveway does have an incline. Today I let the jeep roll down and it then went into gear.
I do put it in gear when I park it. Could the incline be the problem?
Any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx,
    R-

Mine does the same thing. Not sure what it might be other than worn out. Had a lot of manual trannys that did that.

Not sure what 'locked up" means, but grinding in first and reverse while idling is an indicator of cluch release problems. I would check to see if the Jeep is twisted(IE one tire higher than another) Or someother problem causing linkage bind. Also, be sure that it is adjusted properly.

Actually, that sounds kinda normal for a jeep tranny. If you can release the clutch and then push it back in and it goes into gear, call it good. A minor linkage adjustment per the FSM might be all that is needed.

is your linkage adjusted properly? if clutch lever isnt pushing the throwout bearing all the way then it could cause a grind.

I would think the linkage is correct as it shifts normal when driving. Is there a way to tell if it is or not and is there a way to adjust?

That's not necesarrily true. Once rolling it is possible to shift NOT using the clutch. I have done it a couple of times when I wasn't paying attention. I haven't adjusted linkage for a long time. Look underneath at the linkage and I'm sure you can figure it out. You probably need to adjust it out so it will travel further to fully deactivate clutch.

Could be some contamination (oil) on the clutch disc. When cold it may be sticking to the flywheel. Next time you start it cold, put it in gear and depress the clutch pedal. If the Jeep tries to move when you hit the starter the clutch is probably dragging or sticking.

I had a 76 CJ-5 that had some funny problem. Hard going in 1st in reverse from a stand still--grinding even with the clutch all the way to the floor. Turned out to be a worn clutch pilot bushing.

I have the same 3 speed tranny, it shifts very smooth with no problems, does not grind, etc....

But at speeds over say 40 when I let off the gas and coast and it starts to reduce speeds by about 5 mph it starts rattling and grinding and sometimes pops out of gear...if I push in the clutch it is fine....

    Other than that it's perfect tranny......Any idea's?

The brass synchronizers and syncro assembly are probably shot. I had to replace reverse and 1st because of that problem.
