I know it will not last much but i am thinknig bout painting my exhaust black. It seems the VHT brand paints work the best. I cut adn hacked on my exhaust enough i think i want to paint it and make it look a bit nicer.. when i roll over ;) So has anyone else done this? About how long does the paint last?

I used a high heat paint that it used on steam turbines once. It lasted a long time.
If my headers are any clue VHT doesn't like water and mud. :(

I remmeber the cheesey paint i had on a set of pacesetter headers. they were brand new, i watched the paint burn right off the first 5 minutes of running the jeep. Boy was that disheartening. Fortunately i am just doing the exhaust tubing with it, so it may last longer :)

I had success with numerous products painting from the collectors back. Headers are another story... but for tail pipes, mufflers, etc. I've found that prep had to do more with longevity than the paint itself. Some exhaust parts come with that protective oil film - you got to get that off. Sanding helped too. My best jobs included many light coats, and letting air dry in direct sunlight. However some products advise against the direct sunlight thing.

I painted up a pair of headers with a header paint product I found at a local auto parts store. I won't put them to use until next summer - but they turned out really nice. I'm hoping the application lasts.

I've used BBQ paint before. Seems to work fine, but it's not a perminant solution. More like a two year solution.

The guy who installed my exhaust sprayed everything w/ a galvine paint specially for exhausts. Gave me the can with what was left over. Keeps the rust away. Just touch things up when needed. Been over two years and everything still looking good.

Don't have the nme of the stuff, but can get it in the AM.

    Dan,

You're going to have to put it on about 1/4" thick to cover those welds you posted pictures of.

I've been wondering about this too. I'll be putting on all brand-new parts, and have wondered about painting them black to keep the rust at bay.

Used to paint my exhaust on my railbuggy. Lasted quite a long time. Used
standard BBQ grill paint from local hardware store.
