Can I get a one wire alternator that will bolt up in the place of my motorola? If not, what bracket fab is used.

The one wire Delco I have is a 100A unit from Summit. Jegs has them, also. I was a direct bolt in on the :v6:, replacing the Motorola. Not sure about the AMC....

I just installed a one wire powermaster alternator in my '73' CJ5 this weekend. First I called Powermaster and got the part number from them
because the 72-75 jeeps used different alternators and the foot can 1",
2" or 3". Make sure you measure the foot. I got mine from Summit Racing because it was the best price. 190.00 shipped. It was advertised at 170/100 (highway/idle), but when mine came it had a tag on it with the amps being 153/103. Close enough. In my jeep I had to take the bracket off and enlarge the adjustment slot with a small metal grinder, and I had to go to a smaller diameter oil filter so the alternator would fit. I ran an 8 gauge wire from the alternator to the battery and per instructions I took out my amp meter and just connected the wires. I taped up the wires from the old alternator and tried to start the jeep and it wouldn't start. Everything was dead, so I thought about it a while and hooked the heavy red wire that went to the old alternator to the positive on the battery and then everything worked like it should. My only question is that with this new alternator, my headlights are still get brighter when the RPM's go up, so I'm wondering if my battery is bad.

DocsCJ5 as for your last sentence.
As the voltage does increase with RPM you are bound to see some difference. However if you hook one or both of your headlights to your battery temporally with good wire and it happens less...check your stock wire, connections and switch for loss.
Don't let me take this off track...please continue.

The reason I think the battery is the culprit is because when I checked the powermaster web site faq's, apparently the alternator kicks into charging mode at about 1200 rpms and then continues charging until the engine is shut off. But it still doesn't make sense to me because even if I rev the engine and then drop down to idle, the lights dim a bit. I'm thinking a new battery before I start pulling my hair out. Other than that, everything electrical is working OK, except that the parking light on the front left doesn't work. I got it working once by messing with the ground, so I thought I would fix it with a new ground screw and rough up the contacts a little and then it didn't work at all. Sorry for my electrical rambling. Doc

There's Gremlins in my Jeep! The motorola is charging 16+ volts at high idle, yes the voltage regulator is not working. Tested the regulator at Napa it reads 7.8V on his tester. I'm confused and he was confused. The volt gauge was right on in my Jeep. He didn't have one in stock so I moved on in confusion. The reason I dont want to give up yet is because I have all new parts in this old style eletrical system.

I think my one wire alternator was about $60 from a Carquest store. Bolted in the same mount as the old motorola.

    Hi All,

After reading a lot and visiting the http://www.madelectrical.com/ website on installing a Delco Alternator it made a lot of sense to do a three wire set-up vs. a one wire install. Also, after looking at the things they sell and how complete their kits are, when I change to my Delco 10SI, I am going to rewire my Jeep with their kits and use relays for my headlights and horn, and also to their GM remote starter Kit. This new stuff sure looks good compared to what Jeep did in 1953. Vhunter
