    Hello,

I'm confused and can't seem to find the answer I'm llooking for.

    1. how low does the PTO unit hang from the transfer case. ( is it a rock magnet???)

    2. when the pto is engaged for a winch ( and you are winching) can you engage/disengage the driveline to make the tcase turn the wheels.
( tcase only turns winch???not able to turn winch + wheels)

Thanks, I've got an A1 and would like to put a winch on, but not if it doesn't work well for my intentions!!!

    1. It bolts to the tcase using the same 5 bolt holes that the cover plate used.

    2. yes, you can operate the tcase while pto is engaged. You can drive the jeep with the winch operating, it just becomes complicated for the operator.

    Ok,
Thanks I thought the wheels could turn with the pto engaged.

Question 1 though is not exactly what I was asking.

When you bolt the PTO unit on how low does it hang compared to the tcase?

    Thanks JC

what transfer case are we talking about? the d18 bolts to the back of the case and sticks out the back, some of the d20s bolt to the bottom of the case and stick out the bottom. some of the d18 pto's have a housing that, while bolted to the back of the transfercase, sticks out and down to the drivers side.

You should be able to keep it tucked up high enough depending upon which pto you have some hang a little lower than others. I would definetley have a skid plate as well.

There are a couple of PTO's for the dana model 18. The one for the CJ does not hang very low at all.

However, the one for the wagon or truck will hang low, in fact it will interfere with the frame.

You will need to relocate the front exhaust pipe to the outside of the frame crossmember, as the pto shaft needs that space on it's way to the front, if this is a stock M38-A1. This was a standard modification on early CJ5s also.

And I think you might need to modify the stock military emergency brake operating lever, etc. to provide clearance for the PTO unit. IIRC.

    Good luck.
