My carb is burning rich and I cant seem to fix it by the adjustment needle and I dont know what to do.
26.03. 10:09:47 74cj5fl> I dont like the stock height and actually want to lower it but am wondering how many leaves to pull from the springs.
26.03. 10:10:41 74cj5fl> I have a custom gas tank that I want to replace with a new one but cant find the hardware to put in a new one.
26.03. 10:11:34 74cj5fl> I bought a tank from JCW but the straps were not enough to install it since my existing tank bolts right to the frame and I have no other hardware.
26.03. 10:12:27 74cj5fl> I have a metal ''original'' hardtop with doors for sale if anyone is interested. Great condition and will sell for cheap!
26.03. 10:13:37 74cj5fl> Cant seem to find anyone who sells a replacement dash for a 74 that has only the steering cutout only.
26.03. 10:15:06 74cj5fl> I bought windshield latches from a junkyard in calif but they are too wornout to use.
26.03. 10:15:36 74cj5fl> Wish I knew it was so hard to find parts for a 74 before I bought it.
26.03. 10:16:43 74cj5fl> If anyone can help me with these questions please email me at kmcdow@yahoo.com, thank you.

Cut and paste from another board?

    Welcome from W. MI.

First recommendation - junk that JCW catalog, and call Four Wheel Drive Hardware for one of theirs.

    What carb, what engine??
Often when the idle mix screws/fuel mix screws don't work. one cause can be a vacuum leak. Could be other causes, you may need to rebuild the carb.

Post the top for sale on our for sale board.

Welcome to our board, tell us about yourself and your Jeep. Do you have much experience with cars or Jeeps?
    Got pics of your rig?
    Where are you located?

'74s aren't all that hard to find parts for... stick around ;)

Tell us more about the custom fuel tank. Why do you want to change it? Does it leak?

You said you don't like the "stock" height and want to lower it.
How high is it? What size tires? Do you think the springs are stock? Could they be aftermarket lift springs?
When you say lower it, describe more fully what you mean by lowering...

This article might help a little

    http://jeeptech.com/engine/carter.html

I don't think that Carter BBD has a stellar performance record. But then again, I don't know all that much about the Intermediates. Heck I don't know much about anything come to think of it.

The 1V Carter is a YF, not a BBD. There's nothing wrong with the design of the YF AFAIK. Don't the Hurricanes come with a YF?

Does the choke plate open when it warms up?

If the carb is grungy, you'll want to rebuild it. You'll need a kit and a couple of cans of spray-on carb cleaner. We'll talk you through it if you need help.

Lynn's right - parts should be comparatively easy to find. We can help with that too.

How many leaves do the springs have? Can you post a picture?

    Welcome from Boston!

the thing about the parts, IS, that everywhere I look I keep seeing 1976 and newer. Thats not to say that I havent seen all the cj3bs etc... just that I run into parts saying 76 and newer.

the 'custom' fuel tank looks like its going to rust through at any moment, so I want to put a new one in. Also the gauge doesnt read right either.

from what I can tell the leaf springs are stock - stock height - what I was looking to do is lower the jeep some - its not lifted at all but I would like the height that the older jeeps have.

I think you'll find that the '76 cutoff applys more to accessories than hard parts. Jeep changed a lot of stuff about the CJ Jeeps in 1976, and these changes continued to the end of the CJ-5 in 1983, and were mostly shared with the CJ-7 and CJ-8, which ended in '85 and '86 respectively. The '72-75 Jeeps have a lot in common with the earlier Willys and Kaiser Jeeps, but have AMC engines. That's why they are called "The Intermediates" - not really the early Willys/Kaiser Jeeps, but not pure AMC either.

Stock height of a '75 should be the same as an earlier Kaiser or Willys Jeep, unless it's been lifted. The '75 came with a heavy duty suspension option, with 11 leaves on the front IIRC. The standard suspension had 5 leaves. If you want standard springs, you can get them from Espo http://www.espo.com/

Here's a picture of my brand new, stock 1973 CJ-5. It has the heavy duty suspension option. The '73 ride height is identical to the '75. If your Jeep rides any higher than this, then it's been lifted.

Hey 74, welcome from Deltona FL.

For parts Try http://www.4wd.com/vintage you can order their catalog from the website. They have tons of parts for all vintage jeeps. The latest catalog they sent me has parts and accessories from 1941 through 1975. Jeep parts are easy to find if you look hard enough R) Maybe when our jeeps are road worthy we can do some ridin. You plan on going to next years Jeep beach?

I have not heard many good things about the poly tanks: they leak and flex . You may want to steer clear of those. You should get a parts manual. They have important info about parts crossovers.
