I have a 62 CJ-5, When it is parked on a level concrete pad the right front wheel appears to lean inward (nagative camber) The wheel bearings are snug, and the kingpin bearings are new and tight. Cant seem to find any looseness anywhere. Does anyone make a tapered plate to install under the spindle to correct this? The left side appears to be fine.

At one point I believe there was a full contact tapered shim made for this. Seems like if nothing is bent or worn (or loose) camber should be fine. These axles were built to have about 1* positive camber, which seems like a lot, but it works. If you visually have neg. camber, somethings astray...

Could also be spindle bolts pulling out. That's a common problem.

Camber and caster are welded into the front axle when it's made, and can't easily be changed. Could be changed by having a bent housing though.

It would take a heck of an impact to bed the RHS housing though. Did you do the kingpin bearings yourself or did someone just tell you they did them. A grenaded kinpin bearing will cause this very problem. I'd start taking it apart and checking things as you go and if you don't find anything amiss before you get to the kingpins, I'll bet you find one of them trashed. I had one that appeared tight, but fell out in pieces when I removed it.

It would indeed take quite a whack to bend the axle housing/bell on the passenger side :(. I agree that the most likely scenario is a bearing problem of some sort.

If however you can't find any problems there you might want to have a look at the pics of how I checked Tonk's front axle after he got into a tangle with some kid in a minivan

Have a look here- Look for the pics labled "D25 Check"

Of course I had the luxury :)roll: ) of having the axle off to do this but it should be able to be done on the vehicle.

Basicly I made a pair of matched shafts to install in the bells using old spindle bearings (photo 1) . I made them long enough so a straight line between the ends would clear the pumpkin. Once I had them in I placed square tubing across the ends (2) allowing me to check the camber with a cheapy protractor (4) . I checked the axle tubes for "up/down" bends by measuring the distance to the tube & the ends & middle (3 A, B & C ). Same trick using a couple of magnets 90 degrees around the tube to check for "fore/aft" bends (7 & 8A & B ). If you notice that the measurments for both axis were 4" thats just how far the tubes ended up from the housing, total fluke.

I also checked the castor against the pumpkin (5) & spring mounts (6).

According to my measurments everything on my axle is exactly where it's supposed to be :)

I've still got the shafts if anybody want's/needs 'em.

Actually the kingpin bearings are new, I put them in thinking that would fix this problem. I am going to pull the spindle off and have a closer look. Seems to me it shouldnt sag the way it does for no reason. Although I did pack a snowplow around for a few years. I do have a doner or parts vehicle a CJ-6 a couple of years newer, intrestingly enough it leans in on both sides. Anyway thank you everyone for your input!!
