    Hi All,
After my last trip I lost a driver side front wheel bearing on my 71'. I figure now is a good time to fix the bearing and install the Power Lok. I think I can get the wheel bearings at a local shop. My question is what other parts...gaskets, shims etc.... will I need. I am going to get the oil seals and I realize you can't tell me what other parts I will need until it is apart but just looking for some advice.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, if you’re gonna install a Powr Lok you’ll have to remove the axle shafts, so you might as well get two knuckle seal kits while your at it. Other than a new hub inner seals ‘bout all I can think of is plenty of grease and 80/90, oh and some Limited Slip Additive. You’ll have to add that to the gear oil for the Powr Lok.

One other thing, you don’t really have to buy new but have a good look at your king pin bearings, particularly the upper one. The lower one gets lubed by knuckle pudding, but the upper one goes dry if you don’t occasionally repack it with grease.

    Thanks, excellent advice.

Are the king pin bearings a special order item? I am thinking about going to 4wd hardware for the seals and gaskets. Are they something the local Napa would carry?

I doubt Napa would have’em on hand, but could probably order them from their warehouse and have’em in a day or two.

    Here's a list of Dana 27 Part numbers: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/axle/dana27/dana27.shtml

Again, While it's apart... You might want to consider "studding" the knuckles. Article here: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/steering/knuckleStud/index.shtml
It's a very simple upgrade, I did it to my Jeep when I rebuilt the front axle. This would also be a very convenient time to upgrade to 11" brakes if you haven't already. Article here: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/brakes/11InchSwap/11_swap.shtml
    Good luck!

Order new spindle nuts and the correct spindle impact socket when you order seals. It's probably almost guaranteed that someone has used the screwdriver/hammer method on your before, and they're only .99ea (need 4) to replace new. Spindle socket only $7. Use bentonite grease (available at lawnmower supply) to repack your knuckles.

Good point. There’s also a locking plate that goes between the two spindle nuts on each side that , when installing, you will have to bend over a flat of these nuts to keep them from vibrating loose. You could pound the one you take out flat, but I’d buy new.

What about the locking nuts on the outside of the Warn hubs. They look like a "T" with holes in it for the bolt and you bend them over the head of the bolt.

You will need shims to set up the new powerlock so you might as well buy a complete set up kit. If you are going to set up the ring and pinion you might want some set up bearing.

    Hello all,
    Progress report on the rebuild.
I removed the Warn hubs and utside bearing. The culprit was the inside bearing. I seem to have seized the bearing onto the spindle. I am going to try and heat it up and see if it pops loose. If not next alternative is to try cutting a line in it and pry it off.

I have a couple of questions on the teardown.
I am down to the trying to get the knucle off. I removed the bolts through the back, removed the ball joint but still can't get the knuckle off.
    1. Do I need to remove the king pin bearings to get the knuckle off.
    2. Should I just tap lightly on the back of the knuckle to remove it.

As always any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Yes, the king pin cap is what holds it together.

    Alrighty then,

I have the d-side apart. I need new king pin bearings/races, new wheel bearings, new seal and a new spindle/bushing. I had to use a puller to get the inside wheel bearing off the spindle. It is now six thousandths smaller inboard than out. I priced the spindle and bushing from 4wd hardware....any other sources? I was thnking about getting everyhting from them but the shipping seems a bit high.

    Thanks for any help.

I am still trying to find the "locks" for the warn hubs. I'll try to get a pic later today. These look sort of like a "T" that the bolt goes through and you bend down the top over the actual bolt.

    Anyhelp?
