I broke my rearend yesterday bad. the pinion gear is ok but the ring gear is missing 2 teeth side by side. I have a set of 3.73 posit's in a offset 44 flanged. the rearend in the jeep is a 4.88 44 flanged, problem is it's a center feed for the d20 thats on the jeep. I'm stuck out here 22 miles from town and no way to get there, any way someone could talk me through swapping these gears?

Well, if it where me, I would take the ring gear off the carrier, clean out any metal in the pumpkin, then put the carrier back in with out the ring gear on the carrier (don’t forget to put oil in) and drive to town on the front axle and get the correct gear set and repair the rear axle correctly, would be easier than moving gears and setting up from one housing to another and you won't have matching gear rations with the front axle if you swap a different ratio gear set from another axle. Seems to me to be less work this way.

forgot to input that my front gears are 3.73's anyway and I needed to change them to 4.88's but I was waiting till I could get a complete detroit or Auburn's for a d27 frontend. Since I swapped from my d18 transfer, my front driveshaft won't fit. so I've been street driving only. the only truck thats running, Super Snake, is not by any means street legal and will be impounded for 30 days if caught on the road. That is not cool less I drive in the ditch all the way to town at 110mph which it can do easily!

I am going to assume that your front driveline doesn't fit because it uses the small u-joints. If that is the case, take the front yoke off your model 18 and put it on your model 20 then use your front driveline to drive it home.

swap the yokes if the splines are the same. if not call a tow truck to get it home and fix it right. 20 miles shouldn't be expensive.

One, it's at home. two, the d20 on it is off a cherokee so I need to get a yj front drivline and have them take 4 1/8th inches off it. the yokes are fine. can't I just change the ring gear?

I guess I don't get your question then. If the jeep is where you want it, put the 373 gears and carrier in it. Doesn't really matter if the 488 pinion is still good.

Well what I need to know is if I just change the carrier and 373's do I need to do some shimming and HOW do I check that stuff. I know what the parts are but I don't know how to change them with out messing them up. I am good with trannies and engines but never done a set of gears.

take the rear end apart that you want to use. get a factory manual, it tells how to set up the ring and pinion gears in great detail. FYI the pinion gear from the 3.73 WILL not mesh with the ring gear from the 4.88 gears.

I got my parts to set up the flanged rear axle from randy's ring and pinion. would have saved about $80 by getting their 'master' kit over making my own.

From what I have read in your posts, I have to say that if you have never done any ring & pinion work you really need to get someone to do it for you. First off you need a bearing puller for the carrier bearings and a dial indiactor to check the set up and some expirence in reading the pattern. Hope everything goes well for you.
