I am not sure about your questions. I am assuming the axle has a limited slip, and a full float kit on it. Are you going to swap in the whole axle or the innards? If it is a WARN full float kit then it will bolt in to the old axle. If you are also getting the limited slip, you may as well as just use the whoel axle assembly instead of tearing it apart and have to reset everything in the other axle housing.

Yes it is a Warn limited slip with the full floater kit, my buddy took it out of his 70 Jeep so he could put in an ARB, so the housing is not an option, I was told that the housing on the 55 was smaller than the 70 inside both are DANA 44's and if it will go in no problem then I am a happy man. I just bought a Lock Right for my Dana 25 front and am gonna put it in the same time.

The basic answer is yes; Dana 44’s are all the same inside and the carriers will interchange. But, your question leaves some questions, to be asked. Warn does not make a limited slip, but does make the full floater kit. So, are you getting his full floater kit with the axles that match the spline count of the limited slip or are you just getting the limited slip? If you are just getting the limited slip than the spline count on your 1955 Dana 44 with the two piece axles won’t work as a 1970 Jeep which should have come with one piece flanged 30 splined axles. If you get the whole kit with the axles and the limited slip then you are in business. Also, what gear ration did your friend have, and are you running the same gear ration? There may be a problem if the limited slip is not for the axle ratio you have in your Jeep.

The '70 D44 could be the flanged axle. The '55 will be the 2-piece. The Warn FF kit will not interchange between the two, IIRC. It will only work on the 2-piece axle.

Another Ludel answer: In his 1946-1971 Jeep Rebuilders Manual, he put a Warn full floater kit in a '55 housing with a TrueTrac diff. He said he had to use a carrier bearing with a larger inside diameter that fit in the stock cup but could accept the larger diameter Warn 30 spline axles. Everything else looked liked stock in the pictures, but I see what 53Flattie was saying; late '69 I think was the transition period away from tapered axles, so maybe the kit on your buddy's jeep was designed for the flanged axle not your 2 piece. My '70 with a JUN1970 build date has flanged axles.

if the carrier from the '70 uses 30 spline axles and you are going to keep 2 piece axles you are out of luck. I don't believe 30 spline tapered axles are available.

Even if you don't get the limited slip in the rear....you should be fine to make it over the rubicon. I went through 3 years open front and rear without too much trouble. Have fun!

Interesting that you mention Warn limited slip. If it's one of the old Warn Positrac units, it's a locker. I had one in a 64 CJ-6 that I always regret selling.

Man, you are going to have to tow alot of Toyotas while you're there. LOL Our club usually runs the Rubicon around that weekend. I'll be looking for "old yeller" if we go that weekend. Thread Hijacking, Guilty as Charged.

The Ducy is incredibly long and really challenging. You can do it in three days if you move right along and have no mechanical issues. I'll probably be contradicted here, but I think it's much more difficult than the Rubicon. Be ready, it's 31 miles from end to end. I've only run it twice, but it was a great trip both times. Mid to late Sept is a good time to go.
