:v6: recently bought dauntless v6. The guy said he thought it had a bad ring. I have never rebuilt an engine before. So what to do. Yank the heads and go from there? How do I tell if the rings are bad? Any info would help. I have taken the tub off and cleaning up the frame and going from there. Ugo:

I would do a compression test before you take it apart. (Wet and dry) That MAY give some indication of where your problem lies. (Rings or Valves). UNLESS you plan on rebuilding the whole engine anyway.
IF you are planning an entire rebuild to ensure everything is fresh, then yes, pull the heads and look around. Hopefully the cylinder bores are not scored and you can get away with a honing of the cylinders and re-ringing.(Won't really know until it is measured). Do a search, I think AutoZone had a pretty good price on a rebuild kit for the Dauntless.
Let us know what you find. . . .

Compression check, wet and dry is in order as noted above.

A vacuum gauge will also help diagnose issues when combined with the compression check if compression checks out good. May just be a bad valve or lifter, etc.

Never done it but you should be able to hook up a battery and starter to turn the engine over. That's all you need to check compression.
