there is a metal tube from the base of the exhaust manifold, does anyone know where it is supposed to connect to?

Choke heater? If it is, it just presses in and isn't connected to the exhaust.

Yep, sounds like a heater tube for the choke to me.

I think on mine, the choke heater line presses into the top of the manifold. This line is coming from the bottom. Is it something I need or is there a way to cap it. I think what happened is I replaced the exhaust manifold and got a universal one for the 258. I not for sure so I thought I would ask for some help from someone who has more experience. Please let me know.

on another note...and the reason I am asking is because it was hooked up to the top of the carb via a softer fuel line and I think it was dumping exhaust into the top. There is a port on the top with about a 1/4 inch fitting, from what I have seen so far it appears to be a connection for the EGR? My intake doesn't have an EGR on it, so should this be capped? Confusion...confusion

Well, the fitting on the side of the carburetor near the choke is for hot air from the "choke stove." The stock choke stove does press into the top of the manifold, but you can get an aftermarket kit to replace it that can be placed anywhere on the exhaust manifold. Again, it doesn't connect in to the exhaust, but instead provides hot air via a low suction provided by restricted engine vacuum, from inside the carburetor.

If you have a cast-iron intake manifold, the EGR passage is contained entirely within the manifolds. The later aluminum intake manifold uses a tube between the intake and exhaust manifolds to provide exhaust gas to the EGR valve, but it's a big tube, at least 1/2" in diameter.

figured it was a fresh air line that fed the choke stove, connects to a fitting at the top of the carb so only clean air passing through the filter gets into the choke stove and up through the heater line.
