is there a number stamped on the face of the lock ?
if so, a key can be made
maybe so even if no number

Yes, there's a number on the face. I wonder how much it would cost to have a key made?

my books shows 2 different possibilities for this code:
    an old Studebaker code
an old Briggs and Stratton code (locking gas caps etc)
the keyways are common: Ilco 01122A and L1054B
these keys should be tried to see if they go into the lock
if they fit the lock, then the 2 codes could be cut onto blanks and tried, one at a time; if that fails, then a key could be made by hand the old fashioned way.
either way, I would expect you'd have to pay $10-$15, depending on the area you live in.
it would be to your advantage to take it to a shop, let them look at it, get an estimate, and leave it with them if you desire.
any locksmith who is skilled should be able to this in under 10 minutes, no more....assuming the lock isn't damaged, frozen up, etc
    hope this helps

    Gents,

I have the working keyed coil in my 48 CJ2A with the Original Key and it is a Yale. I also have an NOS Lock Cylinder which is the same.

There is also an earlier version made with a Hurd lock and key.

Here are some links to the lock cylinder pictures comparing the two from a recent post on http://www.thecj2apage.com/:

Yale & Towne (left) has square engagement pegs, Hurd (right) has round pegs, and a scallop in the end:

Yale & Towne has a larger diameter key entry, and the key number is stamped into the cylinder. Hurd doesn't have the numbers stamped:
