T14 to SM420 swap--pilot bushing size the same??

Hopefully a simple tech question for someone that knows! I exchanged my T14 with the junkyard that sold me the SM420, but I didn't measure/check the diameter of the input shafts to see if they are the same, and Jon Heikka's tech article didn't say anything about a difference in diameters, so my guess is they are the same. I'm done with all crossmember and linkage mounting, and am waiting to get my driveshafts resized, and I just want to restore my confidence that I'm not missing anything (besides filling with gear oil), before declaring it's ready for test drive/done! On a side note, I was thinking of removing the breather cap on the D18 TC, and running a line higher up on the firewall for a breather--has anyone else done this, or is this overkill since stock position plenty high enough for deep water crossings?? thanks.

Yes I’ve done that. I did it mainly ‘cause I found water in my transfer case when I did my SM420 swap.
If you don’t get into water that comes up to the body, it’s probably overkill but at least you’d be covered incase water like that stood between you and the end of the trail. Besides, it’s a pretty cheap mod.

thanks for the response on the breather. The Rubicon has deep waterholes in late Spring/early Summer from all the snow melt. Should be really deep this year--still plenty of snow west of Cadillac Hill. What diameter hose did you use? It looks fairly big with the cap removed.

As far as I remember I didn't even pull the clutch off mine when I swapped from a T14 to the SM420. So I would say that the pilot bushing is the same and compatable with either tranny.
On a side note, I also did a direct swap from my T86 to the T14 with out any mods when I bought a parts jeep a long time ago.

Of course remeber that this info could be worth exactly what you paid for it R)

    Both the T14 and SM420 are .590 tip, input 1 1/8" x 10-spline. :)

Aw crap, you would ask that. It seems like the hose was only 3/8”.
What I did was take the breather to the local hardware store and bought a barbed fitting with the same threads and some hose, and of course a hose clamp, to fit the barbed end.
They came in packages of two and I’ve got the other somewhere in my garage. If I get the time I’ll have a look at it and let you know for sure.

Corveep--no worries on getting me the diameter on the hose, I was just hoping for a shortcut on pulling the breather to find a matching fitting, but I'll do that to do it right!
Lynn and Flexiheep--Thanks for putting my mind at ease by confirming I'm good to go with pilot bushing! I'm just going to raise breather, bolt up driveshafts, fill with gear oil, remount my custom skid plate, and finally drive this baby again the way she was built to be driven!! It's always more fun than working on it!!!
