OK, I did a search on this and looked at about 20 or so of the 77 threads that came up. Only thing is, I really need to see a good pic, and none had one. I think my brake light switch is just plain missing, I have two wires hanging by the MC and no place for them to go. I can find nothing that looks like the descriptions I have read, and none of my books has a good picture or description. The best I get is a small fuzzy diagram telling me that item "36" is a stop light switch, mounted at the front of the MC. Well at the front of my MC there is a brass fitting with a plug in it and brake line coming out one side. There is nothing that looks like a switch, not even the thing others have described as having "two nail heads". So can any one please help with a good pic? My jeep is a 1966 CJ-5 with the single master cylinder. I'm getting desperate and will appreciate any and all help.

    Thank You, Rob

Typically on an ECJ, the switch is threaded into the end of the MC. I have seen at least one that had a switch plumbed in on one of the brake lines. Trace the path of your lines and see if you have one that's inline. I probably wouldn't be stock, but who knows what a PO may have done. I'd send you a pic, but I shed my frame mounted MC for one mounted on the firewall. The "two nailheads" are bullet connectors. Here's my best guess: buy a stock brake light switch, pull the brass plug on the end of the MC and screw it in. Connect two wires, good to go. One of theose wires should be hot. The switch just connects the two when pressure is supplied by the MC. Unless you have other problems with the wiring, if you connect the two wires you should have brake lights on. Good luck.

Just put in my dual master cylinder, and removed all that. I'm thinking if you remove the plug from that fitting, you will find a switch will fit there. That should put you right back in business!:)

    Rob,
I'm amazed that your single MC doesn't have the brake light switch located immediately to the front of the MC. Howard's pic was good, see below on what the switch looks like typically.

If the switch isn't at that location, perhaps it's either 12" forward of the MC or 30" rearward (or both). Look for the 2-prong dealio that looks like what the arrow's pointing to:

    Rob,
This is the setup on a '70, one forward inline of front brakes, and one aft inline of rear brakes. I know you got a single MC but who knows maybe the brake switch is somewhere else on yours. Just FYI. BTW they look just like the B/U light switch you see on the tranny. View attachment 10868

Hard to see at first in Rocky's pics, but look closely for the red circles surrounding the brake switches' location. Just tryin' to help. :D

My 71 has two switches as well, same locations as Rocky's. I use the one on the rear circuit.

Howard and Hippo393, a picture is worth a thousand words. The switch is definately missing on my MC. Where the switch is mounted in your pics shows that mine has been removed sometime in the past. So I will need to get a new switch and install it.
Thank You very much, cause the pics confirm what I thought but was not sure about.

    Rob
