    Have you considered something in the valve train? Bad or failing hydraulic lifter? may show up at max load

    I know I'm reaching here but it was a thought.

    Yes, I think we've covered the valve train and lifters and springs pretty well here. It's both banks, so unless all springs or lifters are bad...

    the carb swap is going to solve it.....
    gotta think positive

    if not, we remove the radiator cap, and drive a new one under it.....

    Could it be the exhaust riser valve? Perhaps it shuts at a certain point when it shouldn't, etc. You said you have headers, so I don't know if you even have one of these in your jeep. Just a thought.:?

    I don't have that valve, that's why I said I have headers when asked about that valve. ;)

    Wouldn't you get coolant in the crankcase oil if this were the case? And wouldn't the spark plugs show a different coloration near the breach?

    Thats what I always thought but the simple answer is no you wouldn't. My head gasket was blown in the narrow area between cylinders and caused the compression to jump from one cylinder to another when the engine was warmed up and put under load. The head gasket was erroded between the cylinders and caused a similar condition to what Sparky is having.

    Just warmed up or any time under load?

    Mine does this no matter how warm the engine is. Did yours affect exhaust on both sides or just the side the gasket was blown on?

    It affected only the side that the gasket was blown but because it was in 2 cylinders it made the whole engine run rough and stumble. The engine would not do it until it got to about 160* then it would continuously do it.

    Mine does it no matter how warm it is/cold it is and both sides pop through the exhaust...
